Game Comments: Washington Middle School became the eighth unbeaten State Champion in Class 7AA Girls Basketball history with a come-from-behind overtime 32-28 victory over Edwardsville Liberty. The game was played at Parkside Junior High School in Normal after the site was switched from Riverton due to a weather postponement which resulted in a scheduling conflict at Riverton. The Panthers finished 25-0 and produced the school's first title in 7AA. Trailing 21-14 going into the fourth quarter, Washington MS shut down the Liberty balanced offense and outscored the Panthers 11-4. Leading the way for Washington MS in the fourth quarter was 5-10 Hannah Julien with six points, 5-7 Jennica Hipes added three free throws and 5-10 Abby Clanin had a basket. Liberty got points from five different players in the third quarter to build the seven-point lead. In the overtime, neither team scored a field goal. Washington MS outscored Liberty 7-3 in overtime. Abby Clanin made 3 of 6 foul shots, Amy Coates was 2 for 2 from the line and Jennica Hipes went 2 for 2. Cierra Gaines made 3 of 4 free throws for Liberty's overtime scoring. Seven different players scored for Liberty with Cierra Gaines leading the way with 11 points, Only four players scored for Washington MS as Abby Clanin led the way with 9, seven of them in the second half. Liberty finished its season with an 18-3 record. |
