Game Comments: Springfield St. Agnes grabbed the early lead at 9-6 after the first quarter. A three-pointer by Brimfield's Brycie Courter at 4:39 left in the second quarerter tied the game at 9-9. Teammate Micalena Shipley followed with a jumper from the right baseline at 3:52 for an 11-9 Brimfield lead. Brycie Courter hit a jumper at 3:25 for a 13-9 Brimfieldlead. Sarah Mast then hit one free throw on two fdifferent occasions and then a rebound layup to cut Brimfield's lead to 15-13 with less than 10 :05.4 to go. But Brimfield's Kelsey Herridge took a long pass from post player Paige Spietz and scored on a layup at the buzzer for a 17-13 halftime lead for the Indians. St. Agnes scored the first two points of the fourth quarter and didn't score again until Demi VanDerWal made a layup and a free throw for a three-point play at the 3:10 mark of the third quarter. In the meantime, Brimfeld behind the inside dominance of center Paige Spietz, had taken a 33-20 lead. After that Brimfield played meat and potatoes basketball and went to the free throw line almost every time down the court. The Indians hit 17 of 26 foul shots for the game, going 5-6 in the third quarter and then 12 of 19 in the fourth quarter. Spietz, listed at 5-9 in the program, but who plays like she's 6-0 or taller, made 8 of 9 free throws herself. Meanwhile, the Brimfield defense clamped down on the hard-driving Demi VanDerWal, last year's prolific scorer for St. Agnes in both the 7A and 7AA state tournaments. VanDerWal scored only eight points in the game, getting five in the first quarter and three in the fourth quarter. Brimfield advances to meet Normal Epiphany in Tuesday's first semifinal game at 6:00 p.m. with a 24-1 record. Epiphany is 23-2. Springfield St. Agnes finished its season at 23-2.
