Game Comments: The championship game pitted the Hornets of Eureka against the Dragons of Hillsboro. With a packed house, Eureka was first to score in the quarter, but both teams struggled to settle into their offenses. After going scoreless for 3 minutes, Hillsboro called a timeout to regroup. #24 Samantha Matoush grabbed the long rebound and drove the court for a lay-up plus one to put Hillsboro on the board. But Eureka answered with a long three by #24 Morgan Greene. In the waning seconds Matoush drove the lane and tied the game for Hillsboro.
The teams traded baskets at the start of the second quarter. Eureka’s #12 Courtney Heffren continued to drive the ball up the court and drive the lane untouched, but Matoush and #23 Aubry Rupert kept Hillsboro close. #32 Hailey Flowers gave the Hornets tons of second chance points with her offensive rebounds. With 30 seconds in the half, Eureka had the ball and #22 Alison Nohl drew a foul with 19 seconds. She made both for the lead, but Matoush drove the lane to tie the game at the half.
The second half saw flurry of activity. Hillsboro would build a four point lead several times, but Eureka battled back every time. With 30 seconds to play Hillsboro held the ball for the last shot, but took too quick of a shot and Eureka drove the court for a good baseline jumper that bounced off the rim and Hillsboro took a two point lead heading into the final quarter of the game.
Hillsboro took their biggest lead in the fourth quarter on a turnover that they converted in an easy lay-up. They ran a spread offense to pull the Eureka defense from collapsing on the posts and run some time off the clock. With less two minutes to play they turned the ball over and Eureka’s #12 Heffren drove the lane to cut the lead to 2. On the other end of the court, #43 McKinney put back a lay-up to give Hillsboro a 4 point lead. Eureka tried to get off a shot in the last seconds, but a long jumper was rebounded by Hillsboro who quickly ran out the clock.
Leading scorer for the game was Samantha Matoush with 24 points. Courtney Heffren had 20 for Eureka. Congratulations to both teams on a great game and a great season. This is Hillsboro’s first 8-3A state title. They were the defending 7-3A champions from last year.
