Game Comments: Opening game for the 7-3A State Tournament saw the Hornets of Eureka take on the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis. The Hornets were first on the board after winning the jump ball, but the Wooden Shoes muscled back in to take the lead at the end of the quarter. Teutopolis’s post players were a big part of that with their offensive rebounding and second chance points. Holding Eureka scoreless for almost 6minutesthe Teutopolis defense was unrelenting. #22 Alison Nohl for Eureka broke the draught with 2 min to play in the 2nd quarter and gave the Hornets a little momentum, but the Wooden Shoes took a five point lead into the locker-room at the half.
In the second half Eureka came out of the locker-room fired up and cut the lead to two. Their increased pressure on defense and transition offensive gave them several uncontested lay-ups in the third quarter. The Hornets continued their comeback and took the lead early in the fourth when Nohl sank several free throws. The two teams kept it close through the rest of the game and with 40 seconds to play in the half #12 Courtney Heffren stole the ball and drives the lane ends up on the line to shoot 2 and drains both to give Eureka a 1 point lead. Teutopolis inbounds the ball and calls a timeout with 33 seconds to play. They inbounded the ball and missed the baseline shot, but grabbed the rebound only to turn the ball over on an errant shot. Eureka inbounded the ball and Heffren who drove down the court and was fouled making both her free throws. On the next play #31 Olivia Niemerg got a look at a three to tie the game, but #4 Lauren Ausmus grabbed the rebound and was quickly fouled, but missed her free throws. Teutopolis had one last look, but was unable to convert. Congratulation to Teutopolis on a great season.
Eureka will play in the semifinal game tonight at 5pm.
