Game Comments: In what began as a defensive struggle turned into a 33-17 Mt. Olive victory over Peoria St. Philomena, sending them to the Class 2A state finals. A somewhat low scoring game early on, neither team could find any rhythm on offense, turning the ball over left and right. Peoria clung to a 7-4 lead entering the second, but could not contain Jill Niehaus and her four second quarter points. Although their offense was less than consistent, the defensive effort by the Bombers left the Tigers continually frustrated, as they trailed 13-11 entering halftime. After a third quarter that saw both teams score only four, Mt. Olive finally broke loose in the fourth, netting 16 points. Of those 16, eight of them came from Niehaus, who was on when her team needed her. She finished with a game high 18 points. Despite shooting over 80% from the free-throw line, Peoria St. Philomena just couldn't generate enough offense after the first quarter.
Mt. Olive will play Thursday, December 13th at 7:30pm for the state championship. They'll face off against the winner of tonight's final game, Mendon Unity vs. Bloomington Holy Trinity.
The runner-up in that contest will take on Peoria St. Philomena prior to the championship game this Thursday, at 6:00pm.
Good luck to both teams in your upcoming trophy games! |
