Game Comments: It was a championship that lived up to the billing, as the Monticello Sages defeated the Eureka Hornets 39-25 to capture the Girls Class 3A state championship. The first quarter saw both teams trade baskets seemingly every possession. That was until Monticello took control of the second quarter by outscoring the Hornets 9-0 heading into halftime. That would be short lived, as Eureka came out firing from the three point line, at one point cutting the lead to just four. However, it seemed like every time the Hornets would mount a rally, Tatum McCall and her teammates would answer with huge buckets of their own. McCall finished the evening with a game high 25 points, as the Sages shot an impressive 15-25 from the charity strip. Eureka can go back and pinpoint their struggles to their inability to sink free throws, hitting only 5-14 on the evening. A 15-7 fourth quarter run finished off a perfect season for Monticello, as they end the year an astounding 28-0.
Congratulations to both teams for a hard fought tournament, and a tremendous season.
