Game Comments: With an undefeated season hanging in the balance, the Sages of Monticello grinded out a 25-23 victory over Dunlap Valley to advance to the 7th Grade Class 3A State semifinals. Down two at halftime, the Sages emerged from the locker energized and refocused. Monticello promptly put together what could be their signature quarter of the season, outscoring the Spartans 11-4 in the third. Led by Tatum McCall's 14 points, Monticello built a 24-19 lead heading into the 4th quarter. However the Spartans wouldn’t go quietly, down two points with under 10 seconds to go, Dunlap forced a quick turnover as they drove the ball down court. With final seconds ticking away, Kai Koehler launched a go-ahead three but was quickly called for traveling, thus waiving off the basketball with 2.2 left on the clock. The win puts Monticello at a remarkable 26-0 as they move on to face the winner of Paxton-Buckley-Loda and Crest Hill Richland.
What a tremendous effort by both teams.
