Game Comments: The undefeated Normal Kingsley Cavaliers and the undefeated Piasa Southwestern Piasa Birds squared off against each other for the 8th grade class 4A state title in front of a packed gymansium at Rochester JHS. In what will be described as a classic, the Cavaliers of Normal Kingsley completed their quest for back-to-back undefeated seasons by narrowly defeating the Piasa Birds, 34-31. The game was well-played from beginning to end. Kingsley was led in scoring by Bailey Larsen with 11 points and Chante Stonewall with 10. Stonewall scored all of her points in the first half as Southwestern played terrific defense on her and the rest of the Cavaliers in the 2nd half. In fact, Kingsley did not score a 2 point goal in the entire second half. They had two 3 point goals and 7 free throws in the 2nd half. The 4th quarter was intense as Kingsley held a slim 2 point lead, 27-25, heading into the final stanza. Larsen converted 2 free throws a minute into the 4th quarter to extend the Cavaliers lead to 4 at 29-25. She followed that with a 3 pointer about a minute later to give Kingsley what seemed like a comfortable 7 point lead at 32-25. The 7 point lead was the largest of the night for Kingsley. But, the Piasa Birds would not quit. Kelsey Rhoades, who led all scorers with 15 points got a rebound bucket to cut the lead to 5 at 32-27. Kingsley came down the floor and missed their shot and Piasagrabbed the rebound. With 2:41 left in the game, Southwestern called a time out. Coach Wooley designed a beautiful inbounds play that led to an easy layup for Rhoades which cut the lead to 3 at 32-29. Kingsley then held the ball for over a minute and it wasn't until Piasa was able to foul a Kingsley player with 1:25 left that the clock stopped. A held ball possession gave the ball to Piasa but the Piasa Birds turned it over to Kingsley. With 1:04 remaining, Elixis Swartzentruber made one of two free throws to give Kingsley a four point cushion, 33-29. Southwestern brought the ball down the court and they missed a shot but the ball went off a Kingsley player out of bounds giving the ball back to the Birds. With 34 seconds left Maddy Greeling hit a runner in the lane that cut the lead to 2 at 33-31. Kingsley then held the ball until the :13 mark when Lauren Harrigan was fouled. Harrigan who had not scored all night went to the line for the biggest foul shots of her life. She banked in the first attempt and missed the second to give Kingsley a 34-31 lead with 13 seconds to go. Piasa grabbed the missed free throw and called time out to set up a potential game tying shot. Piasa worked the ball up the court and with the clock winding down took a shot to tie the game. However, Chante Stonewall was there to block the shot, the clock ran out and Normal Kingsley won the game. Congratulations to both teams on an excellent ball game and terrific seasons. Kingsley finishes the year with a 26-0 record while Southwestern finishes at 27-1. |
