Game Comments: The Normal Kingsley Cavaliers took a giant step forward in their quest to win the 8th grade Class 4A state title with a hard fought, well played game against the Rochester Rockets. Kingsley defeated Rochester 50-47 in 2 overtimes and in doing so handed the Rockets just their 3rd in loss two years--all at the hands of Kingsley. In 2010 as 7th graders Kingsley defeated Rochester in the semifinals of the tournament 22-17. Kingsley went on to win the 7th grade championship last year while Rochester took home 3rd place. In a regular season game earlier this year, Kingsley defeated Rochester by 2 points to give the Lady Rockets their only loss of the season. This matchup was one for the ages as Rochester did its best to avenge their only two losses in the last two years. Kingsley led 16-8 after one quarter thanks to 7 points apiece from Chante Stonewall and Bailey Larsen. Rochester used its pressure defense to hold the Cavaliers to just 3 points in the 2nd quarter as they closed the gap at halftime to just four points, 19-15. The rest of the game was just as tight as the score would indicate. Kingsley led 24-23 heading into the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter was intense as both teams had numerous opportunities to win the game. Both teams can look at missed free throws as the chance to either win the game or lose the game. The two teams combined for 73 attempts but they made just 35 of those attempts. In fact, Rochester set the Class 4A record for most free throw attempts in a game with 40 and most made free throws in a game with 21. Rochester had a great chance to win the game in regulation. With 1:31 left in the game, Megan McNicholas, who led all scorers with 24 points, made a 17 footer and was fouled after the shot. She made both of the free throws and her four point play turned a 2 point deficit into a 2 point lead, 33-31. Stonewall made 2 free throws for Kingsley to tie it at 33. With 34 seconds left, McNicholas again came up big for Rochester when she nailed 2 free throws to give her team a 35-33 lead. But Stonewall was up to the task as she hit a 10 footer from the right side to tie the game at 35 with just 24 seconds left. Rochester worked the ball down the court took a shot and missed but Ally Milnes was there to grab the rebound. She was fouled in the act of shooting with just one second showing on the clock. Milnes missed both free throws but on the second miss, McNicholas knifed into the lane, grabbed the rebound and got the shot off in time. Had it gone in, it would have counted. Instead, it just rolled off and the two teams headed into the first overtime. Stonewall scored first for Kingsley giving them a 2 point lead at 37-35. McNicholas countered with 2 free throws to tie it at 37. Kendall Sosa was then fouled for Kingsley and she made one of two free throws to give the Cavaliers a 1 point lead at 38-37. McNicholas was fouled again an made both of her charity tosses to give the lead back to Rochester at 39-38. With 42 seconds left in the 1st overtime, Bailey Larsen made the biggest play of the overtime. Stonewall missed a short shot in the lane and Larsen hauled down the rebound, made the shot and was fouled. She completed the conventional 3 point play to give Kingsley the lead, 41-39. Sam Churchill of the Rockets was fouled and she made one of two free throws to cut the lead to one with 24 seconds left. Stonewall missed a shot for Kingsley with 12 seconds to go. Rochester gathered the rebound and got the ball in the hand of McNicholas. She was fouled on her shot attempt with just 5 seconds to go. Down one and with two free throws, McNicholas missed the first free throw but with the game on the line she calmly was able to convert the last free throw to send the game into a 2nd overtime. Sam Kearney gave Rochester a lead in the 2nd overtime with a bucket at 43-41. Then with 2:06 left, the biggest play of the game was turned in by Stonewall. Sosa was again fouled. She made the first free throw but missed the 2nd. Stonewall gathered the rebound, made the shot, was fouled. She missed the free throw but Kingsley had a 44-43 lead. Rochester lost the ball out of bounds and Larsen hit a 2 pointer for Kingsley to give a 3 point cushion at 46-43. Two more free throws by Stonewall extended Kingsley's lead to 5 at 48-43. Another free throw by Sosa pushed the lead to 6 at 49-43 with 33 seconds left. McNicholas was fouled for Rochester and she made one of two to make it 49-44 with just 24 seconds left. Jackson hit one of two free throws to make it 50-44 with 21 seconds left. Kylie Clemens hit one of 2 FT for Rochester and a rebound basket at the buzzer made the final score 50-47 in favor of Normal Kingsley. Kingsley will now face Champaign Jeffeson at 5:00 p.m. in a battle of unbeatens for a spot in the championship game. Congratulations to both teams. |
