Game Comments: The Springfield Grant Generals secured the 4th and final spot in the semifinals of the 8th grade class 4A tournament with a thrilling 34-32 victory over the Minooka Indians. Grant will take its 23-1 record into the second semifinal game of the evening against Piasa Southwestern. Grant jumped out to an erly 8-6 lead after one quarter but Minooka scored 15 points in the second stanza to take an 18-14 lead into the locker room at the half. Grant outscored the Indians 15-7 in the 3rd quarter to take the lead heading into the finalperiod. Alyssa Hajduk hit a big 3 pointer early in the 4th quarter to keep the Indians in striking distance and then hit a 2 pointer from just inside the arc to give Minooka the lead at 32-31 with just over a minute left in the game. Grant's go to player, Tosha Curtis, who led all scorers with 20 points then hit a turnaround jumper from 18 ft with 53 seconds left to give the Generals the lead right back at 33-32. Minooka missed a layup with about 40 seconds to go, grabbed the rebound and missed again. Grant secured the rebound and managed to run the clock down to 30 seconds. Grant was not yet in the bonus so Minooka had to make several fouls to get a chance to get the ball back. Finally, with :2.9 left in the game, Minooka fouled Curtis and put her at the line for a one and bonus. She made the first free throw but missed the second. Minooka grabbed the rebound and pushed it up the court. They could not get a shot off in time and Grant won a very exciting game, 34-32. Congratulations to both teams. |
