Game Comments: The 7-3A championship game saw the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis take on the Indians of Gillespie. Both teams came ready to play and Gillespie scored on their first possession, but Teutopolis had a quick answer. The Wooden Shoes went on a little run in the quarter on the shooting of #25 Luke Ungrund, but Gillespie kept it close and #34 Devin Stroh scored a put back jumper at the buzzer to cut Teutopolis’s lead to four. At the start of the second quarter, the Wooden Shoes went on a 4-0 run until Gillespie answered at the 3 min mark. Teutopolis took an 8 point lead into the locker-room.
The start of the second half saw both teams struggle on offense, but Gillespie settled into it at the end of the quarter and outscored Teutopolis 8-3 and cut the Wooden Shoes lead to 3 to start the fourth quarter. Gillespie tied the game at the 4:54 mark with a free throw. The Indians out rebounded the Wooden Shoes in the quarter. Teutopolis was quick to answer with a three by #25 Ungrund. As the quarter progressed, Gillespie once again cut the lead to one on their offensive rebounding and sinking their second chance points. With 2:20 to play they took the lead with a three by #23 Frankie Barrett. After a timeout by T-town, #34 Mitch Hardiek drove the lane and tied the game again. The teams continued to battle and the end of the quarter saw the game in a tie se3nding it to overtime.
In the overtime, Gillespie was first to score and added to their lead when #43 Anthony Kravanya grabbed the rebound on a long shot and put it up for two. T-town had several looks at the basket but nothing was dropping for them and Gillespie continued their domination on the boards. With 10 seconds to play #24 Mitch Henmen was fouled shooting a three and drained two out of three. On the inbound #25 Ungrund touched the ball out of bounds and Gillespie was awarded technical free throws which were both missed. T-town immediately fouled #34 Devin Stroh on the inbound after the technical. Devin sank both his free throws to go up 5. T-town inbounded the ball and never got a good look at the basket and the clock ran out.
Leading scorer for the game was #43 Anthony Kravanya with 16 points. Teutopolis had two players in double digits, #24 Mitch Henmen with 12 and #25 Luke Ungrund with 13. Congratulations to Gillespie and Teutopolis on a great season and a great game. This is Coach Wargo and the Indians of Gillespie’s first 7-3A state title.
