Game Comments: Gillespie's Grace Bertolino kicked off scoring on an open 2-pointer, but a Mayo free throw and Whitney Todd responded back with her own layup giving Mayo a 3-2 advantage. Bertolino tied the game at 5-5 and was fouled on the play. Gillespie's Keaton Link tied the game back to 7-7, a Hannah Barrett free throw gave Gillespie an 8-7 lead and the crowd erupted with another 2 points from Gillespie with less than a minute remaining in the 1st quarter. Gillespie finished the quarter with a 10-7 lead. Gillespie fired back into the second quarter scoring 4 quick points in the first 39 seconds and forcing a Mayo timeout. Gillespie continued the momentum but a pair of Mayo shots cut Gillespie's lead to 6 with 2:43 remaining. Gillespie's Sydney Bires closed the first half with a short jumper and a 23-12 lead.
Mayo came out firing in the second half with a 7-2 scoring run, but Gillespie held a 29-20 lead when Mayo called the first timeout of the second half with 1:28 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The 3rd quarter closed with Mayo leading in scoring 10-7. Mayo continued to try to overcome their scoring deficit, but Gillespie maintained their lead throughout the 4th quarter - Mayo's Caroline Martin riled up the crowd with her 3-point shot with less than a minute left in the game, but the Gillespie Indians ultimately defeated the Mayo Redbirds 36-26.
Mayo finished their season at 22-3 - congratulations to their coaches and student-athletes for their state series appearance! Gillespie will face Olympia at the 6:30 pm semifinal game tonight.
