Game Comments: The last game of the evening began and defense from both teams prevented any scoring within the first 2 minutes; a 30-second timeout brought both Olympia and Gillespie back to the floor and Gillespie made 1 free throw to get the scoreboard started. Gillespie advanced their lead to 7-0 as time expired in the first quarter. Grace Bertolino extended the Gillespie lead to begin the 2nd quarter with a quick layup. With 3:45 remaining, Bertolino drew a foul and made an appearance at the free throw line - she was 1 of 2 from the line and Olympia's Kaiden Finck took the defensive rebound to give her team the possession when they were trailing 10-0. Bertolino went back to the free throw line on an Olympia technical foul and made both free throws. On Olympia's next possession, Abbi Bode banked a layup to put Olympia on the board 12-2. Lauren Aldridge kept Olympia's momentum going with a blocked shot against Gillespie. Gillespie's Keaton Link was fouled on a successful jumper - the Indians maintained a 17-2 lead going into halftime.
Gillespie started the scoring with 4 points in the first two minutes of the 3rd quarter and Olympia followed up with 2 points of their own. The quarter ended with Gillespie in the lead 23-4. Olympia began the 4th quarter with an 16-6 run bringing the score to 29-20; Gillespie called a timeout with 1:21 remaining in the game. The Olympia Spartans continued their push for points and brought the score to 29-22 with :30 left. A turnover from each team and a Gillespie foul brought Abby Stine to the line and she made 1 of 2 free throws to cut the lead to six at 29-23. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Congratulations to both teams. The Olympia Spartans will face Teutopolis at 6:00 pm on Thursday, December 10 in the 3rd place game. Gillespie will face St. Agnes in the championship game at 7:30 pm on Thursday, December 10. Good luck to both teams as they continue their season! |
