Game Comments: It was winner take all for the 7-1A State Championship, as the Annawan Braves narrowly defeated Dieterich by the final score of 45-40. This one was all Braves early on, as Annawan sprinted out to an 8-1 lead mid-first quarter. With just under 50 seconds to go in the second quarter, trailing by 14, the Roadrunners made back-to-back threes to end the half cutting it to 21-13. After halftime, Dieterich picked up where they left off, sinking yet another three to make it 21-16. It was at this point where the Braves looked as if they were going to pull away for good, outscoring the Roadrunners 10-4 to close out the third quarter. Brendon Shaw sank 8 of his game high 19 points as the Braves were seemingly unstoppable. However every time it appeared Annawan was on the verge of pulling away, the Roadrunners would produce clutch buckets when they needed them. It was that aggressive approach that served Dieterich well in the fourth quarter, as Tyler Higgs and company lit up the scoreboard late to pull within two. It was not to be however, as clutch free-throws by Ben Buresh with 10 seconds left iced the game and the state title for Annawan. Buresh finished with 15 points, but more importantly went 7 for 9 from the charity stripe.
A tremendous championship effort caps off a terrific season for both teams! |
