Match Comments: The Indians of Channahon faced off against the Panthers of Pekin Edison in the 8-4A championship match. The two teams battled it out from the opening serve. #28 Olivia Klank had a beautiful drop serve to tie it at 7 for Channahon. Channahon capitalized on the momentum when Holly Bonds served six consecutive points to give Channahon a nice lead in the first set. Pekin made a run at the end with great defense and heads up play by Hannah Thompson, but the lead was too much to overcome and Channahon took the first set with a kill by Rocky Perinar.
In the second set of the match, Pekin Edison took the early lead on the serving of #4 Maddy Cash. #11 Holly Bonde stopped the run with a kill in the middle, but Channahon failed to capitalize on the turn and Edison went up 9-3. Bonde stepped up to serve for the Indians and brought them back within two before Hannah Thompson had a kill down the line for Pekin Edison. When Taylor Baranski stepped up to serve she fired off4 service points with three aces and Edison called a timeout to stop the momentum at 15-13. Channahon never gave up and a kill through the block by Bonde had Perinar stepping up to serve at 22-18. She tied the set at 22 until Thompson for Edison stopped the run with a nice hit up the side that Channahon was unable to defend. Pekin Edison took the set on a hit off the block by Thompson.
In final set of the championship match, #10 Emma Wiegmann gave the early lead to Channahon serving 6-0 before Pekin called timeout to stop the run. The early lead help the Indians of Channahon throughout the match, but Pekin Edison never gave up. They came back from 20-12 to cut the lead 24-23 when Channahon called timeout to stop the run and won the match on a service error. #1 Baranski had a great set at the net as she was the go to hitter in the final points for Channahon. Congratulations to both teams on a great season. This is Channahon’s first 8-4A state title.
