Match Comments: One great rally after another marked the first quarter-final game of the day. The Mattoon Wildcats faced the Spartans of Frankfort Summit Hill. Both teams played excellent defense which forced the hitters to be creative and patient. In addition to great defense, passing was solid on both sides of the net. Dani Burkman had 5 consecutive service points in the middle of set 1 to put the Spartans up. The Wildcats turned to their net play to help keep them in the set. Cassi Dow had 2 kills and 3 blocks in the first set for the Wildcats. Renee Murphy answered with 5 kills in the first for the Spartans. In the second set, defense continued to be a key for both teams. However, it was the serving prowess of Ivy Nichols who spurred on the Wildcats. Her 3 aces helped the Wildcats clinch the second set. Sarah Lewis had 4 kills in the second set for the Spartans. The third set saw some of the best rallies the match offered. The defensive battle was impressive. Layden Butler came in to the match taking over to serve and rattled off an ace that brought the Wildcats to within one. The match ended at the net. Avery Jackson had 3 kills in the third for the Wildcats. Lewis had 2 kills in the third for the Spartans.

Congratulations to Frankfort Summit Hill on a tremendous season.

Mattoon moves on to the semi-finals this afternoon.
