Game Comments: Winchester capped off an undefeated season with a thrilling 47-39 victory over Brimfield before a nearly sold out crowd at the Hawk Center in Riverton. Winchester finishes the season with a perfect 27-0 record while Brimfield closes their season with 26 victories and just two losses. The game was close throughout as the Wolverines led by just three points at the half. Winchester turned up the intensity on defense in the third quarter as Brimfield had numerous turnovers and simply could not get the ball to drop in the bucket. Winchester scored the first six points of the third quarter to extend their lead to 29-20 before Lexi Snyder got a bucket at the 4:00 mark to score the first points of the 2nd half for Brimfield. Snyder led Brimfield in scoring with 18 points. With the score 36-26 in favor of Winchester to start the 4th quarter, Brimfield came out strong at the start of the period. Mallory Meinke sank two 3 pt. goals and Cameryn Swietk swished one from 3 pt. land to cut the Wolverine lead to 41-37 with 2 minutes remaining in the game. From that point on however, Annika Kaufmann dominated the game for Winchester. Kaufmann, who scored a game high 28 points which tied the Class 2A championship game record for most points in the game, made 4 free throws down the stretch to keep Brimfield at bay. Lauren Sellars had back-to-back steals for Winchester in the final minute to seal the victory for Winchester. Kaufmann shattered the tournament scoring record with 84 points in the three games. The previous record was 68 set by Grace Baalman from Hardin Calhoun in 2011. This was a terrific game played by two excellent teams. Congratulations to both teams on outstanding seasons.
