Game Comments: The Winchester Wolverines kept their dream of an undefeated season alive with a 42-40 heart stopping victory over the Wildcats of Altamont. Winchester (25-0) will now face Bloomington Holy Trinity at 5:00 p.m. later today in the first semifinal contest of the 2A tournament. Altamont closes out their season with a 22-4 record but not before giving Winchester all it could handle. Altamont led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter behind the hot shooting of Mary Guse. She knocked down two of her five three point goals in the first quarter en route to a team high 17 points. Her five 3 point goals set a Class 2A record for most three point goals in a game. However, that was not the only record set in this game. Annika Kaufman was the star of the game as her game high 34 points broke the record for most points in a class 2A game and her 12 field goals tied the record for most two point goals in a game. Her biggest basket of the game came with just 8 seconds left when she drove the left hand side of the lane and made a twisting layup to give the Wolverines the lead, 42-40. Prior to that game winning shot, the teams played a terrific game. Winchester seemed to take control early in the third quarter as they led at one point during the third quarter, 38-31. However, Guse caught fire for Altamont as she dropped three 3 point goals in a span of about 2 minutes to help the Wildcats tie the game at the end of the 3rd quarter at 30 all. With 1:45 left in the game and the score tied at 38, Kaufmann drove the lane and made a short shot to give the Wolverines the lead, 40-38. Altamont turned the ball over on its next possession and Winchester held the ball until they turned it over with 50 seconds remaining. Altamont brought the ball down the court and missed its shot to tie the game but the rebound resulted in a held ball with the possession arrow favoring Altamont. With just 22 ticks left on the clock, Tinley Mette made a 15 footer for Altamont that knotted the game at 40 all. Kaufmann then delivered her game winning drive to the basket to secure the victory for the Wolverines. A great game played by two terrific teams. Congratulations to both teams!
