Game Comments: The 8-1A championship match pitted the Hilltoppers of Danville Schlarman against the Sharpshooters of Sigel St. Michael’s. The Hilltoppers won the jump ball and missed a lay-up but ran a nice out of bounds play to #5 Scott for a three and they took the early lead. Schlarman’s press and up-tempo game had the Sharpshooters turning the ball over more than they liked in the first quarter but they never stopped fighting for the ball. The Hilltoppers started the second quarter with a great play to #5 Scott on the baseline and once again she drains the three. #2 Jolene Bueker for the Sharpshooters drained a three of her own next trip down the court. Sigel was able to cut into the lead of the Hilltoppers with some great defense that caused several turnovers that they converted into points. But the quick steals and lay-ups kept the Hilltoppers on top by 15 at the half.
The Sharpshooters came out of the locker-room fired up. They added 4 quick points and caused the Hilltoppers to turn the ball over several times. The teams traded threes and continued the up-tempo game. #21 People drove the lane and added to the Hilltoppers lead. Sharpshooters #1 Schumacher drained a last second three at the buzzer to cut the Hilltoppers lead to 21 heading into the fourth quarter. #5 Sadie Bueker for the Sharpshooters drained her second three of the half at the start of the fourth quarter. #2 Jolene Bueker added a second three to cut the lead to 15. A 9-0 run by the Sharpshooters had Schlarman calling a time-out to settle his players who continued to rush their plays in this final quarter. #5 Scott broke the scoreless streak in the fourth quarter with two free throws. A couple of quick drives in the lane and dishes to the post had the lead back up to 18 with a minute to play. Even though the Sharpshooters held the Hilltoppers to 6 points in the fourth quarter the early lead was too much to recover from. Both teams played a hard fought championship game and combined for 13 three point baskets in the game.
Leading scorer for the game was Ariel Scott with 26 points for Schlarman. There were several other players on both teams in double digits. Anaya Peoples had 16 points for Danville, Jolene Bueker had 14 points and Bailey Schumacher had 10 points for Sigel St. Michaels. This is Danville Schlarman’s first 8-1A state title. Congratulations on a great season for both teams.
