Game Comments: The championship match-up for 7-2A saw the Indians of Brimfield take on the Saints of Bloomington Holy Trinity. The Saints won the jump, but the Indians were the first to put points on the board with a jumper from #13 Kamryn Cuevas. Then the two teams had trouble settling down and neither team scored again until 1:40 mark on the clock. It wasn’t until the second quarter that Holy Trinity made its first basket, but Brimfield failed to convert themselves and never fully pulled away from the Saints in the first half of play.
The third quarter saw a more determined team come out of the locker-room for Holy Trinity. With two quick baskets they were able to cut the lead to 2. Brimfield continued their up tempo game. When they were not running the ball up the court they worked the ball around the horn and worked it into #33 Lexi Snyder in the post who had several baskets in the paint. But the Saints would not go away. #12 Lauren Shanks continued to drive into the lane amongst the trees and get some shots off. She went 5-7 in the second half from the free throw line. Shanks drove the lane with 14.5 seconds to go and lobbed the ball into #44 Bailey Coffman to tie the game at 17. With #33 on the bench for Brimfield and a costly turnover. Shanks drove the lane with a floater at the buzzer that would have given Holy Trinity the lead, but the ball bounced out and the teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 17.
The final quarter of the game was more of the same for both teams. The teams traded free throws for while the Indians maintained a small lead. Shanks drove the lane and tied the game up again at 22 with a baseline jumper and the teams remained tied until the 1:25 mark when Snyder made a free throw to put Brimfield up by 1. This lead the Indians would not relinquish. Congratulations on a hard fought game and a great season to both teams. Leading scorer for the game was Lexi Snyder with 16 points. Lauren Shanks and Bailey Coffman both had 11 points for Holy Trinity. This is Brimfield second 7-2A state title. Their first was in 2010.
