Game Comments: In the final quarterfinal match-up, the Raiders of Champaign St. Matthew played the Colts of Mendon Unity. Both teams showed some nervous energy in the 1st quarter and there were no points scored until close to the end of the quarter by St. Matthew. The 2nd quarter saw both teams settle a little, but the Colts didn’t get into a real rhythm until the 2nd half. Champaign took a 15-6 lead into the locker-room.
The third quarter saw the Colts play more aggressive and St. Matthew struggled with the pressure and bringing the ball up the court. The Colts were able to get within 2 point at the end of the quarter. The final quarter of the game was a battle by both teams with Mendon taking their first lead of the game with 1:52 to play. Champaign St. Matthew applied the pressure and put the Colts on the line, but the Colts were unable to pull away and the Raiders were able to stay in the game. With 13.5 seconds to play #00 Abby Leibach drove the court and put up a lay-up to pull within 1 point. After the time-out, Leibach stole the ball and drove for a lay-up again to give St. Matthew the lead 25-24 with 6.9 seconds to play. Mendon Unity got a shot off, but it went long. Abby Leibach and Isabell Atkins both had 9 points for the Raiders while the Colts had scoring from 6 different players.
Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought game and a great season. Champaign St. Matthew will play in the 6:30 semi-final game tonight.
