Game Comments: The Lady Giants of Canton Ingersoll captured their first IESA Class 8AA girls basketball title Thursday evening with a 39-37 come from behind victory over Bellwood Roosevelt. Ingersoll finished 2nd in 2001 losing to Washington Central. Roosevelt finishes the season in 2nd place with a terrific 18-2 record while Ingersoll finishes at 26-1. Roosevelt led by three after the first quarter and at halftime and stretched the lead to five at the end of the third quarter. However, the Lady Bulldogs went cold in the 4th quarter and the Lady Giants were able to take advantage of the situation. Mallory Moser started the scoring for Ingersoll in the fourth quarter when she hit a shot just inside the three point line to pull Ingersoll within three, 35-32. Roosevelt's all everything player, 6'2 Michala Johnson, then made a beautiful layup at the 5:23 mark to put Roosevelt back up by five, 37-32. Unfortunately for the Lady Bulldogs, those would be their last points of the game. Katelyn Garish scored on a layup at the 4:41 mark to pull the Lady Giants to within three and then Moser made one free throw with 3:39 remaining to get Ingersoll within two, 37-35. Ingersoll finally tied the score at 37 all with 1:43 left in the contest when Katie Harkless hit a fifteen footer from the left side of the floor. Reana Minor of Bellwood was fouled at the 1:12 mark but missed both foul shots. Ingersoll then took the lead with 36 seconds remaining when Brittany Martin scored on a layup which gave the Lady Giants a 39-37 lead. With :13.7 seconds remaining a held ball possesion gave the ball to Roosevelt who called timeout to set up the last play. Roosevelt moved the ball around the perimeter, passed it in to Johnson who managed to get it out to Minor. Her 5 footer hung on the rim and when it did not go through and Bellwood was not able to secure the rebound, Ingersoll had won the game and the championship. (Note: There was not enough room on the box score above to list two points scored by Stevie Joachim of Ingersoll on a field goal in the third quarter to round out the scoring for the Lady Giants)
