Game Comments: Michala Johnson and Darnissa Gray each scored seven points to lead Bellwood Roosevelt to an 18-13 halftimelead over Champaign Franklin. Franklin jumped to a 6-1lead in the first quarter when Isis Griffin scored on a steal layup at the 2:18 mark. Franklin didn't score again until Kierra Robinson put in a layup in the second quarter with 3:41 togo and that cut Franklin's deficit to 15-8. The teams traded turnorver and baskets the rest of the half, one that was like a battle of jet fighter planes. Both teams applied pressure defense and tried to press the ball up court full throttle. Franklin's defense bottled up the tall Michala Johnson, but her teammates roamed the baseline for baskets and assists. Franklin was ice cold from the field during the first half. Bellwood Roosevelt was determined to get the ball inside to tall and talented Michala Johnson in the second half and the Lady Bulldogs did it well. Limited to 7 points in the first half, Johnson poured in 13 in the third quarter and 8 in the fourth quarter before leaving the game with about 2 minutes to go. She finished with 28 points. Roosevelt led only 25-20 with 3:03 left in the third quarter and then its defense produced turnovers that led to fastbreak layups or rebound put backs by Johnson. Johnson scored four baskets and Renna Minor got a steal layup in the final 3:02 to push Roosevelt ahead 35-22 after three quartewrs and that was it. Roosevelt advances to the title game Thursday night with an 18-1 record. Champaign Franklin finished at 19-1. Bellwood Roosevelt's only loss this year was 38-37 to Lombard St. Luke in a Thanksgiving Tournament.
