Game Comments: Game three of today's Class 2A quarterfinals was an overtime thriller that saw the Vikings of Peoria St. Vincent de Paul narrowly defeat the Panthers of Ford Heights Cottage Grove UGC by the final score of 45-37. The tempo for this eventual nail-biter was set early on, with both teams asserting their will defensively. Points were extremely hard to come by in a first quarter that saw both teams aggressive in the paint. The Panther's Davion Ash netted four of his team's 10 first quarter points en route to an early 10-9 lead. Back would come the Vikings, as a balanced second quarter attack gave Peoria St. Vicent de Paul a 19-17 lead heading into the half. After trading baskets seemingly all of the third quarter, the Vikings managed to corral a three point lead late. Back would come the Panthers and the dominant post-play from Davion Ash. The standout guard muscled in a late three point play that would notch things even with roughly two minutes remaining. After a quick turnover by the Vikings, Ford Heights Cottage Grove pushed the ball down court for a chance to take the lead and potentially the game. With under a minute to play, Kendrick Fillyaw dribbled to the back corner of the arch and heaved a go-ahead three that would put the Panthers up 37-34. Facing a three point deficit with 15 seconds left on the clock, David Czirjak drained a clutch three to tie the game after a well-designed inbounds play. Minutes went by in overtime with neither team able to convert offensively until Czirjak sank two late free throws. From then on, the Panther offense went quiet while the Vikings clung to a late lead that sealed the victory. David Czirjak finished with a game high 21 points for the Vikings, while Davion Ash tallied an impressive 19 points for the Panthers.
With the victory, Peoria St. Vincent de Paul awaits the winner of this afternoon's contest between Madison and Fisher. The victor will face the Vikings in tonight's second semifinal matchup which tips off at 6:30pm.
Congratulations to both teams on an incredible game. |
