Game Comments: In the first Class 2A quarterfinal contest of the day, the Trojans of Elmwood made an early lead stick as they defeated the Bullpups of Effingham St. Anthony by the final score of 51-42. In the early stages of the first quarter, both teams were putting up points at an impressive rate. For the Trojans, it was Cameron Jacobson netting five of his team's 13 first quarter point. Meanwhile, the Bullpups were close behind thanks to a set of threes courtesy of Colin Koester and Quinton Milleville. With the two teams separated by just a single point heading into the second quarter, the Trojans began to crank up the heat offensively. Key ball movement from Clay Coulter combined with the continued hot shooting of Cameron Jacobson gave Elmwood a 25-19 lead heading into the half. The third quarter would see several attempts by the Bullpups to close the gap, evening coming within four points. However, each time a run for St. Anthony appeared on the horizon, a Trojan would make a key shot to strengthen the lead. It didn't help that the Bullpups found themselves in foul trouble late in the third. Fast forward to the fourth quarter, and it was all but wrapped up thanks to some key free throw shooting by the Trojans. Cameron Jacobson of Elmwood and Quinton Milleville of Effingham St. Anthony each netted a game high 14 points.
With the win, Elmwood advances to this evening's semifinal contest, as they await the winner of this morning's quarterfinal game between Decatur Robertson and Streator Woodland. Game time for tonight's semifinal is 5:00pm.
Congratulations to both teams on a terrific opening game! |
