| Match Comments: The Pleasant Plains Cardinals captured their third 8th grade Class 3A title in the last four years Tuesday night by defeating the Beecher Bobcats, 25-21, 25-17. The Cardinals won the title in 2010 and in 2011 and last year took home second place honors. The Cardinals also captured the 7th grade title last week and so the Cardinals now hold both the 7th grade and 8th grade titles for 2013. With this 8th grade victory, Pleasant Plains finishes their season with a 25-2 record while Beecher finishes an outstanding season with 21 victories and just 7 losses. This second place finish is the first time the Bobcats have placed in the 8th grade volleyball tournament. Their 7th grade team won fourth place last week. The Cardinals used a steady offense and defense to capture the championship. In the second set, Beecher jumped out to a 7-4 lead but Plains rattled off five consecutive points to take a 9-7 lead. From that point until the score was 15-14 in favor of the Cardinals neither team led by more than one point. When Lily Slifer got a service winner, Plains took a 16-14 advantage and extended the lead to 17-14 on a kill by Lauryn Leonard. A hitting error by Plains pulled the Bobcats to within two at 17-15. However, the Cardinals dominated the rest of the match. They scored five straight points to extend the lead to 22-15. Beecher managed just two more points while the Cardinals continued their steady play and scored the final three points to finish the set and the match. Congratulations to both teams. |
