Match Comments: The Eureka Hornets captured third place in the 8th grade class 3A volleyball tournament Tuesday night with a thrilling victory over the Panthers of St. Joseph. With the victory Eureka closes out their season with a 25-3 reocrd while St. Joseph finishes the 2013 campaign with a 20-5 mark. The match was close throughout as neither team was ahead by more than five points in either set. The final set had an exciting finish. With the Hornets leading 21-19 and on serve,a kill by Lauren Rokey gave Eureka a 22-19 lead. However, the Panthers came right back on a nice back set by Andrea Coursey to make it 22-20. A hitting by error by the Panthers gave Eureka a 23-20 lead but they could not hold serve as St. Joseph got a sideout point on a kill by Kylie Michael to make it 23-21. St. Joseph then got an ace on its serve from Addy Parke to pull within one at 23-22. A timeout for Eureka slowed the momentum for the Panthers as the Hornets got another kill from Rokey to make it 24-22 which gave them the chance to serve for the set and match. However, Rokey's serve went long and the score was now 24-23 with St. Joseph serving. Eureka could not return a volley and the Panthers tied it at 24. On the next volley, the Panthers hit it into the net to give a sideout point to Eureka at 25-24 with another chance at match point. This time, the Hornets delievered as Veronica Cadieu had an ace for a 26-24 victory and third place for the Eureka Hornets. Congratulations to both teams.
