Game Comments: The 2012 8-1A championship game was a rematch of the 2011 7-1A state title game between Rantoul St. Malachy and Atwood-Hammond. The first quarter saw the teams trade points to stay at 6 apiece. The Chargers of Atwood #3 Kimberly Davis was on fire in the 2nd quarter from the perimeter. She had 10 of her game high 14 points in the 2nd quarter. The Chargers took advantage of some key turnovers by St. Malachy to give them a 5 point lead on a 3 point basket by Davis. But Rantoul’s #21 Grayson Carver hit a baseline jumper to cut the lead back to 3 with two minutes to play in the 2nd quarter. Rantoul managed to stay close at the end of the quarter to keep them in the game. In the second half #13 Andie Bolton drove the lane right at the start to but the lead to 2, but #23 Peyton Wellbaum answered right back for Atwood-Hammond with a rebound basket. Towards the end of the 3rd quarter the Chargers slowed the play down and moved the ball around the perimeter, but a sloppy pass gave #13 a steal and a lay-up. In the fourth quarter, turnovers and missed layups held the quarter scoreless until the 3:30 mark when Davis went to the line and sunk both her free throws. #30 Kayonna Bufford ended Rantoul’s fourth quarter draught at the 1:42 mark and cut the Chargers lead to 4 by sinking her two free throws. Atwood-Hammond seemed to have the game under control, but in the closing seconds they fouled #21 Carver behind the three point line and #30 Bufford on an inbound play. Carver went 1 for 3 and Carver made her first but a lane violation turned the ball over to the Chargers in the closing seconds of the game.
Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought game. This is head coach Lynn Farmer and the Chargers’ first 8-1A State Championship title.
