| Game Comments: The state championship was on the line when the undefeated Elmwood Park St. Celestine Celtics squared off against the undefeated Bartonville Monroe Flyers. The Flyers would grab the early 4-2 lead until the Celtics’ Annie McKenna hit a big three to help put her team on top. Her three would help spark a 12-0 run that the Celtics would carry into the second quarter. The Flyers’ Meghan Thompson and Shakyra Brown both got layups that help draw them closer and stop the Celtics run. With one second to go in the first half, the Celtics Annie McKenna got a jumpshot off to give them the 17-8 lead heading into the half. Both teams turned up the offense in the third quarter. The Flyers’ Shelby Terrell got a bucket to get her team started. Kaitlin Aylward got a nice jumpshot from the corner to help extend the Celtics lead. The Celtics would hold an eight point lead going into the fourth quarter. A layup by Mackenzie Widmer helped the Flyers cut the lead to single digits, but it would not be enough. The Celtics take the state championship by a final score of 41-28. The Flyers finish the season with one loss and the state runner-up trophy. Congratulations to both teams on an outstanding season. |
