Game Comments: It was the Atwood-Hammond Chargers and the Rantoul St. Malachy Tigers who would take to the floor for the state championship. This game did not disappoint, it was just as exciting as the first game of the night. The Tigers stormed out of the gates with their high scoring offense. Andie Bolton poured in 10 first quarter points to help the Tigers extend their lead. Defense clamped down for both teams in the second quarter. The Chargers’ Payton Wellbalm hit four big free throws to cut the deficit to single digits before the half. The Chargers came out of the locker room and scored nine points in the third quarter and the deficit was now just three. The Tigers were able to put some quick baskets on the board to get a grasp on the game. But the Chargers would not go away. The Chargers climbed all the way back and were only down by one. The Chargers stole the ball with 20 seconds to go and scored a layup to take the lead. That is all that they would need and the Atwood-Hammond Chargers take the state championship by a score of 31-30. The Rantoul St. Malachy Tigers finish the season with second place honors. Congratulations to both teams on an amazing game. |
