Game Comments: The final match-up of the day saw the Falcons of Gibson City take on the Panthers of Washington MS. In this defensive battle the Panthers opened the scoring on a nice drive by #24 Colin Dietz, but GCMS #35 Bryce Barnes immediately answered with a three. GCMS took the lead on a jumper by #21 Connor Birky. Washington’s press initially caused problems for the Falcons, but late in the half they were able to get a long pass in to add to their lead 11-8 at the half. GCMS defense helped shut down Washington’s several scoring threats in the half.
After the half, #24 Connor Dietz once again opened the scoring in the half with a nice drive and pull-up jumper in the lane. After several minutes of play, #24 Caleb Bleich for GCMS added two for the Falcons. The Panthers outscored the Falcons 8-3 in the quarter to make-up the deficit from the first half and to go up by one heading into the final quarter. #24 Bleich for GCMS opens the quarter with a driving lay-up to retake the lead for the Falcons. The teams battled in the final quarter. With three minutes to play Washington MS comes out of the time out and runs a nice play for #21 Caleb Fisher who drains the three and the lead for the Panthers. GCMS had several chances at the free throw line to tie the game and Washington had several chances to pull away at the free throw line, with 2.6 seconds to play, #2 Payton Havens puts in two free throws to give Washington MS a 4 point lead and the game.
Leading scorer for the game was Payton Havens with 12 points. Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought game. GCMS will play in the third place game and will play in the championship game Thursday night.
