Game Comments: The quarterfinal match-up of the 8-2A Boys State Tournament saw the Raiders of Champaign St. Matthew take on the Hornets of Mt. Sterling Brown County. Both teams ran a fast paced offense in the first half. In the first quarter they were able to convert on this pace and the Raiders took the early lead, but #25 Doug Wallen picked up 2 fouls in the first quarter and sat the entire 2nd quarter. The Hornets took advantage of Wallen being out and took the lead in the 2nd quarter. The fast pace caught up with both teams in this quarter and turnovers and missed layups plagued both teams in this quarter.
The second half continued to a great contest. With Wallen back in the game there was a different intensity to the Raiders and they cut the lead to 1 at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Raiders take the lead from the Hornets early on, but the Hornets would not go away. #12 Carter Lewis had 10 of his 20 game high points in this quarter. Additionally, #32 Justin Bottorff added 9 in this quarter going 5-5 from the line when the team needed the points to secure the lead and the win. #25 Doug Wallen was leading scorer for the Raiders with 19 points but in the end costly turnovers and MT. Sterling’s ability to capitalize on these turnovers gave the Hornets the win.
Congratulations to both teams on the Hornets will play tonight in the first semi-final game.
