Game Comments: The final quarterfinal match-up of the day saw the Vikings of New Lenox Martino take on the Meteors of Mokena. Mokena was first on the board with a basket in the lane by #30 Nora Ansburg, but Martino was quick to answer with a basket by #31 Sydney Swanberg. A couple of quick steals and a heads up play by #5 Kaylen Evans pushed the Meteors to a 9-3 lead at the end of the quarter. Early in the second quarter Swanberg drove the baseline to tie up the game at nine apiece. Martino took the lead late in the quarter and held Mokena scoreless for the quarter to take a two point lead in at the half.
Both teams came out of the lockerroom flat after the half and didn’t get much going in the third quarter. But at the start of the fourth, #15 Maura Harvey found her outside shot and drained two three’s for the Vikings. #5 Evans answered with a three of her own as the teams traded baskets. The last minute of the game saw a flurry of action. With 50 seconds to play Swanberg drove the lane to give Martino a one point lead. The teams traded defensive stops and with 5.1 seconds Mokena inbounded the ball to Evans under the basket for the go ahead basket. New Lenox took a timeout with 2.5, but wasn’t able to convert on the long shot. Leading scorer for the game was Kaylen Evans with Mokena with 14 points.
Congratulations to New Lenox on a great season. Mokena will play Rockford Flinn in the second semi-final game tonight.
