Game Comments: Before a packed house, the Morton Jr. Potters defeated Edwardsville Liberty, 27-24 to cap off an undefeated season and capture the first place trophy in the 2012 7th grade Class 4A girls basketball championship. Morton used a a very patient offense to slow down the Panthers who received a game high 20 points from Rachel Pranger. Morton led 23-22 after three quarters but Liberty scored the first bucket of the 4th quarter to take a 24-23 lead. Little did everyone know that those would be the last two points of the game for the Panthers. After Pranger's basket that gave Liberty the lead, Morton got a 16 foot jump shot from Caylie Jones to re-take the lead for good, 25-24, with 3:22 remaining in the game. She followed that basket with two free throws at the 2:19 mark to extend the lead to what would turn out to be the final score at 27-24. Both teams committed several turnovers, missed shots, and missed free throws in the last two minutes of the game. Despite all of that, Edwardsville had a chance to tie the game with 7 seconds remaining after Morton missed the front end of a one and bonus. The Panthers inbounded the ball in front of their bench to Pranger who was able to get off a game tying 3 pointer. The shot was just short and when Morton rebounded, the celebration began for the champions. Morton finishes the season with a perfect 27-0 record while Edwardsville has just this one loss and finishes at 27-1. Josi Becker set individual and championship game records with four 3 point field goals as she led Morton with 15 points. Congratulations to both teams.
