Game Comments: Whatever words of encouragement or pep talk Coach Noelle Clark gave to her squad at halftime worked as Clark's Pleasant Plains Redbirds came back from a 12 point halftime deficit to defeat Clinton, 34-32 to claim 3rd place in the IESA 8th grade Class 3A girls tournament. Early on it was all Clinton as they jumped to a 12-4 lead after one quarter and led by as many as 16 at one point in the second quarter. Payton Bieber led the way in the first half as she scored all 8 of her points in the first two quarters helping Clinton to a 22-10 halftime lead. Pleasant Plains came out strong in the second half as Summer Sabo contributed 6 points in the 3rd quarter as the Redbirds outscored the Maroons 13-4 in the 3rd quarter to make the score 26-23 in favor of Clinton heading into the final quarter. With 3 minutes left in the game, Kristi Isaacs hit a 15 footer for the Redbirds to cut the Maroons' lead to one at 28-27. A Clinton miss gave the ball back to Pleasant Plains and Isaacs came up big once again for the Redbirds. With 2:30 left, her three point attempt from the left side of the court found the bottom of the net and suddenly the Redbirds led 30-28. The Maroons came right back as Haley Ginger nailed a 16 footer from the right side at the 2:10 mark to knot the score at 30. After a Pleasant Plains miss, Bieber grabbed the rebound for Clinton and then made a great assist to Jessica Scott who converted the layup for 32-30 lead for Clinton. Both teams missed shots on their next possession and after a Redbird timeout and 1:00 showing on the clock, Rachel Smith hit a 17 footer from just inside the top of the key to tie the score at 32-32. Clinton brought the ball up the court and missed their shot but Bieber was there for the rebound and was fouled on her put back. However, she missed both free throws but Jessica Scott got the rebound on the second miss. Clinton then turned the ball over with 25 seconds left. The final 15 seconds of the game were frantic. With the score tied at 32, Smith took a shot to give the Redbirds the lead. Her shot was a bit short but Claire Neibergall got the rebound and put it back in with 9.6 seconds remaining to give Plains the lead at 34-32. Clinton managed to get two shots off in the final seconds but neither would fall and Pleasant Plains capped off a great comeback with a 34-32 victory. Congratulations to both teams on outstanding seasons. Good luck to all the 8th grade girls as they enter high school next year.
