Game Comments: In what will surely go down in the history of the IESA as one of the best basketball games ever played, Farmington outlasted Clinton 48-44 in double overtime to advance to the championship game of the 8th grade class 3A state tournament. This was a clash of titans and every time Farmington seemed like it had a bit of an advantage, Clinton would somehow find a way to climb back in the game. For those who were in attendance, they were treated to an outstanding game between two teams that simply would not quit. The game started out very fast paced and well-played. Farmington jumped out to a an 8-3 lead in the first quarter but Clinton scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 10-8 lead. Farmington regained their composure and took the lead back on the strength of the inside play of Hannah Jostes. Jessica Scott hit a big 3 pointer for Clinton to stop some of the momentum Jostes had given the Farmers. The score at halftime was 15-13 in favor of Farmington. Little did anyone know what the final outcome would be. With just under three minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Paige Pasley of Farmington hit a 10 footer from the right side to extend the Farmer's lead to 3 at 23-20. Megan Tool of Clinton answered that immediately to make it 23-22. Hanna Jostes made a layup for Farmington to move it back to a 3 pt. lead but Payton Bieber answered for Clinton to make it 25-24 heading into the final stanza. Jostes started the 4th quarter scoring by rebounding a missed shot and putting it back in for a 3 pt. lead. Shalyn Houston countered with a 17 footer to make it a one point game. Jostes scored again for Farmington and Clinton came right back when Bieber made a short shot in the lane to make it 29-28 in favor of the Farmers. The next several trips down the floor resulted in turnovers for Clinton while Farmington could not make a basket. Another turnover by Clinton gave the ball to Farmington but the Farmers gave it right back. Bieber missed a layup for Clinton but the scramble for the rebound resulted in a held ball with Clinton having the possesion arrow. On the inbounds play, Bieber was fouled sending her to the free throw line for a one and bonus. Bieber calmly sank both free throws to give the Maroons a 30-29 lead. After the free throws, Farmington committed a turnover to give Clinton the ball but Clinton turned it right back over to Farmington. Down 30-29, the Farmers needed something big to regain the momentum. Bree Bozsoki provided that lift when she made her only basket of the night but what a huge basket it was. From 20 feet, Bozsoki nailed a three pointer to give Farmington a two point lead at 32-30. Now, it was Clinton's turn to answer. They pounded theball inside to Bieber and with 1:36 left in the game, she was fouled while shooting. This time, Bieber missed both charity tosses and Farmington kept their 2 point lead. The Farmers then played keep away from Clinton as the Maroons, who only had one team foul, were forced to foul to get the ball back. The strategy worked as Farmington missed a shot. Clinton got the rebound and worked it up the court. Megan Tool had an open look but missed her shot. Farmington rebounded and looked to hold the ball to win the game. Jessica Scott stole the ball with 19 seconds remaining. Clinton got the ball again to Bieber inside and she was fouled. Down two with 6.6 seconds to play, Bieber converted both free throws to forge a tie at 32. Farmington could not get off any kind of shot and the game went into overtime. In the 1st overtime, Farmington jumped ahead by three, 35-32, on a free throw by Allyx Camp and a bucket by Brianna Rutledge. However, Clinton did not get rattled and Tool made a basket to pull Clinton to within one at 35-34. After each team turned the ball over, Jostes was fouled and went to the line for a one and bonus. She missed the front end but Farmington grabbed the rebound but missed their shot. The ball went off Clinton out of bounds. With :09 showing on the clock, Clinton was forced to foul. Ahead 35-34, Camp went to the free throw line. She made both ends of the one and bonus to give Farmington a 37-34 lead. Down three, Clinton raced down the court and attempted a two point shot that was cleanly blocked by Farmington. As it turned out, that block was a blessing in disguise for the Maroons. The ball went out of bounds off a Farmington player with 2 seconds remaining. Farmington called a timeout. On the inbounds play, Haley Ginger made the game's biggest shot as she just beat the buzzer with her three point attempt that found the bottom of the net forcing a 2nd overtime. The 2nd overtime started off with both teams trading one free throw to make it 38 all. Clinton then took the lead when Tool hit a 17 footer from the right hand side to make it 40-38 in favor of the Maroons. Farmington then grabbed the lead on the strength of back-to-back baskets by Camp making it a 42-40 lead in favor of the Farmers. Haley Ginger of Clinton was fouled and she made one free throw to make it 42-41 in favor of Farmington. Clinton got the ball back and a foul on Farmington when Tool was attempting her shot put her at the line with a chance to tie or even take the lead. She made the second of her two attempts. With the score now tied at 42, Annika Lopez hit about a 10 footer from the right side to give Farmington the lead at 44-42. Camp stole the ball from Clinton and after a missed shot, Jostes then put in a rebound bucket to give Farmington the lead at 46-42. Ginger came up big for Clinton again making a runner in the lane to cut the lead to 2 at 46-44. With 4.8 seconds left, Pasley was fouled. She calmly sank both free throws to make it 48-44 and seal the victory for Farmington. This was a great game and both teams are to be commended for their play and effort. Farmington will play in the championship game on Thursday while Clinton will play for third place honors. Congratulations to both teams.
