Game Comments: The Bartonville Monroe Flyers captured the IESA 7th grade Class 1A girls state basketball championship Thursday night by defeating Flanagan, 38-25 at Normal (Chiddix) Jr. High School. Monroe finishes the season with a 24-1 mark while Flanagan bows out at 16-11. Monroe held a six point lead at halftime but Flanagan scored the first four points of the third quarter and closed the gap to 19-17. Monroe didn't score until the 3:23 mark of the third quarter when Meghan Thompson made one free throw to make the score 20-17. Flanagan's point guard #4 Rachel Quaritsch picked up her 4th foul early in the 3rd quarter which hampered Flanagan's effort and ability to get the ball up the court. However, the Falcons didn't quit. Kelsi Scott made two free throws to pull Flanagan within one at 20-19. Monroe quickly moved the lead to three when Shelby Terrell made a layup to make it 22-19. With 1:50 left in the 3rd quarter, Sam Lyons then hit a 5 footer in the lane to pull Flanagan back to within one at 22-21. When Mackenzie Widmer missed her attempt for Monroe, Flanagan got the rebound and with 1:00 left in the 3rd quarter, Flanagan gained a one point advantage when Lyons made a shot from the free throw line to make it 23-22 in favor of the Falcons and they had all the momentum. However, from that point on, it was all Monroe. After Lyons' basket, a three second call on Monroe gave the ball back to Flanagan under the Flyers' basket. Bailey Dunne of Monroe stole the ball from Flanagan and scored a bucket to give the lead back to Monroe at 24-23. Monroe stole the inbounds pass and after a missed shot, Terrell put the rebound back in to give the Flyers a 26-23 lead heading into the final stanza. Monroe then scored the first 12 points of the 4th quarter and adding those 12 to the last four of the third period, the Flyers scored 16 consecutive points to seal the victory. Terrell led the way for the Flyers with 12 points while Dunne contributed 11 points and Widmer added 10. The Falcons were led by Ashley Van Weelden with 11 points. It was a well played championship game. Congratulations to both teams on excellent seasons. These two teams will meet again on Saturday, December 11 in the first round of the 8th grade tournament that will be held in East Peoria.
