2022 IESA Golf State Tournament Tees Off in Metamora

Students from 81 Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) member schools will compete in the 11th annual IESA Golf State Tournament at Metamora Fields Golf Course in Metamora with girls on Thursday, Sept. 15 and boys on Friday, Sept. 16. There will be over 150 students who will compete in the event over the two days. The first tee time is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. for both the girls and boys on their respective days.

The state finals will consist of a girls division and a boys division. All participants will compete in one 18 hole round of golf.

The girls sectional qualifying tournaments were held on Wednesday, September 7 at four different sites across the state. The boys sectional qualifying tournaments were held on Thursday, September 8 at seven different sites across the state. This is the eighth year that the boys and the seventh year that the girls advanced to the finals as a result of sectional tournaments. A total of 158 schools participated at the sectional level.

There are several returning medalists within the girls' field this year. Reese Wallace (Barrington Station) placed 2nd place last year as a 7th grader and finished as the top golfer at her Sectional. Sophia Christy (Barrington Prairie), who was a 6th grader last year, placed 4th in 2021. Jennifer March (Arlington Heights South) took 5th last year and Ally Suhre (Edwardsville Liberty) who placed 9th last year won her Sectional coming in to this year's tournament. All return for what should be a very competitive 2022 Championship.

In the Boys division, Brody Allen (Normal Metcalf) is returning after finishing 4th place last year. Owen Coniaris (Winfield Wheaton Christian) took 5th place last year and was the top finisher from his Sectional this year. Owen VanZuiden (Fulton River Bend) will also return to improve on his 6th place finish from last year. Also capturing a Sectional title this year was Braden Hayes (El Paso-Gridley) who finished 8th place in the 2021 tournament.

Four courses served as sectional hosts on September 7 for the girls ---Sectional A was held at Boone Creek Golf Course in Bull Valley; Sectional B was held at Madison Golf Course in Peoria; Sectional C was played at Lincoln Greens in Springfield; and Sectional D was played at Wolf Creek Golf Club in Pontiac. There were 18 state qualifiers from Sectional A; 22 qualifiers from Sectional B; 17 qualifiers from Sectional C; and 16 qualifiers from Sectional D. The boys competed in their sectional qualifier on September 8 at seven different sites. Sectional A was held at Ingersoll Golf Course in Rockford; Sectional B was held at Quail Meadows in East Peoria; Sectional C was held at Arrowhead Country Club in Edelstein; Sectional D was held at The Lincoln Elks Golf Course in Lincoln; Sectional E was held at the Pontiac Elks Course in Pontiac; Sectional F was held at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Paris; and Sectional G was held at Wolf Creek Golf Club in Pontiac. The number of golfers who qualified for the state final from each sectional varied slightly. Sectional A had 12 state qualifiers; Sectional B had 10 qualifiers; Sectional C had 11 qualifiers; Sectional D had 10 qualifiers; Sectional E had 11 qualifiers; Sectional F had 10 qualifiers; and Sectional G had 11 qualifiers. The number of qualifiers from each sectional varies due to the number of golfers who participate at each sectional site.

Live scoring will be available on the IESA website as the rounds are being played and a complete hole by hole listing will be posted on the website at the conclusion of the day. The awards ceremony will take place after the last golfers have completed their round. Individual awards will be given during the ceremony, with the top 10 finishers in each division receiving medals.

There will be no admission or parking charge at the tournament.
