Smith Sets Only Record Friday in State Track and Field Meet

EAST PEORIA - Carlie Smith of Decatur Hope set the day's only record when she went 16-11 to win the seventh grade girls long jump Friday on the first day of the IESA Class A State Final Track and Field Meet at the EastSide Centre.

The old record in the seventh grade girls long jump was 16-3.50 in the 2002 meet by Dawn Kernich of Mt. Olive. Smith beat her nearest competitor, Christina Shields of Rockford Keith Country Day, by nearly 13 inches. Shields jumped 15-10.50.

Findlay Okaw Valley had three winners Friday. Olivia Herzog won the seventh grade girls shot put with a toss of 32-2 and the seventh grade girls discus in 97-7. Walker Herzog won the seventh grade boys 1600-meter run in 5:01.10.

Other winners in seventh grade girls were Alyssa Winchester of Ottawa Wallace in the high jump at 4-11 and Kaley Ummel of Lexington in the 1600-meter run in 5:21.81.

In eighth grade girls, the Friday state champions were: Sarah Peach of Kewanee Wethersfield in the long jump with a leap of 16-7; Ashley Gaston of East St. Louis Jackson in the shot put with a toss of 34-3.50; Brittney Algar of Lexington in the high jump at 5-1; Molly Dahlquist of Peoria St. Mark in the 1600-meter run at 5:19.50; and Heather Puckett of Neponset in the discus at 102-11.

Mitchell Mammoser of Newton St. Thomas won the seventh grade pole vault for the second straight year, this year at 10-5. He tried three times and missed at the eighth grade boys state record of 10-10.5. He won last year as a sixth grader with a mark of 9-1.

The other seventh grade boys winner was Terry Yelm of Kewanee Wethersfield in the long jump at 17-8.50.

In the eighth grade boys meet, winners were: Calyton Hendricks of Virden in the pole vault at 10-6; Alex German of Peoria Christian in the long jump at 19-0; and Cody Carson of Carthage in the 1600-meter run in 4:53.71.
