Chicago St. Malachy vs. Dieterich
|
The first game of the tournament was a thriller. Dieterich led Chicago St. Malachy at the half by one point. Dieterich stretched to a 10 point lead in the third quarter. St. Malachy battled back in the fourth to cut Dieterich's lead to 4. Dieterich made some crucial free throws in the last minute to clinch the win. Tyler Campbell led Dieterich with 19 points. Kurt Berg and Nick Wendling contributed to the win with 8 points each. The Rams of Chicago St. Malachy were led by Jamell Tyson with 11 points, Jerimah Hill with 8 points, and Ulysses Davis with 7 points. Dieterich advances to Monday's Quarterfinal Round.

Paris Crestwood vs. Springfield St. Agnes

Paris Crestwood dominated the second game of the tournament. The Eagles of Paris Crestwood controlled both the offensive and defensive side of the game. Chase Brinkley was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 23 points. Also contributing to the win were Jason Hollis with 14 and Aaron Rhoads with 12 points. Springfield St. Agnes was led by Colton White with 14 points, Gus Bloink with 10 points, and Donovan Kavish with 9 points. The Eagles will advance to Monday's Quarterfinal Round.

Wenona Fieldcrest East vs. Griggsville-Perry
|
It was a low scoring first half between the Knights of Wenona Fieldcrest East and the Eagles of Griggsville-Perry. Griggsville-Perry entered the game as the only unbeaten team in the tournament and led 12-9 at the half. The game entered the final minutes of the third quarter tied up. Back-to-back turnovers by both teams frustrated both teams within the final seconds of the third quarter. Mike Reynolds made 2 free throws with 30 seconds left in the third to put the Knights up by 2. The Eagles' Brian Baker answered with 1 free throw to cut the Knights lead entering the fourth quarter.
Free throws were the name of the game in the final minutes of the fourth. With two minutes left in the game, Fieldcrest East was up by 2 points. Zach Baker made one free throw for the Eagles to cut the lead to 1. With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Griggsville-Perry was forced to foul. Zach Anderson made one free throw with 13 seconds left to put the Knights up by 5. Anderson finished with 5 points for the game. Leading scorer for Fieldcrest East was Lee Weld with 11 points. Aaron Wilson contributed to the Knights win with 4 points. Zach Baker was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 5 points. Griggsville-Perry received contributions from Drew Kennedy, Chase Vose, Brad Sargent, and Brian Baker all with 4 points each. Wenona Fielcrest East advances to Monday's Quarterfinal round.

Lewistown Central vs. Springfield Little Flower
|
The first half finished 24-22 Lewistown Central. THis capped off a closely battled first half. Lewistown Central had a huge momentum shift late in the 2nd quarter. Nick Orwig came up with 2 big rebounds for the Indians of Lewistown Central. In addition, Orwig scored two baskets to tie the game. Scott Parrish scored the last basket of the half to put the Eagles up by 2.
The Falcons of Springfield Little Flower came up with key baskets from Adrian Cave. The Indians ended the third quarter with a steal from Parrish who fed an incredible behind-the-back pass to Brent Burrows who cut the lead to 4.
The Indians were forced to foul late in the fourth quarter and Little Flower converted their free throws. Andrew Cave of Springfield Little Flower was the leading scorer of the game with 30 points. #25 Nick Orwig finished as the leading scorer of Lewistown Central with 18 points.
Springfield Little Flower advances to Monday's Quarterfinal round.

Lovejoy vs. Normal Metcalf
|
At the end of the first quarter the score was 8-8 as both teams tried to settle their nerves. In the second quarter Lovejoy scored 3 quick basekets to go up by 6 points. #5 Ikechi Nnamani of Normal Metcalf managed to grab a missed three point attempt and convert it into a lay-up to cut the lead to 4. But the Wildcats of Lovejoy answered quickly with a three point basket by #23Leroy Jones. Lovejoy went on to end the half up 24-14. Ikechi Nnamani of Metcalf was the leading scorer for the half with 8 points of Metcalf's 14. #42 Marcus Ford of Lovejoy had 7 points.
In the third quarter Metcalf cut into Lovejoy's lead outscoring them 12-8. At the start of the fourth quarter the momentum continued in Metcalf's favor as they cut the lead to 1 point with a two point basket and a three point back to back basket from #23 Vince Chiodo. Lovejoy answered with a breakaway layup.
With 3:49 to play in the quarter Metcalf tied the game as Lovejoy called a timeout to regroup. #1 Dwayne Hamiel of Lovejoy drove the lane for a layup to give the Wildcats of Lovejoy a 5 point lead and they never looked back.
Ikechi Nnamani of Metcalf was the leading scorer of the game with 15 quiet points. Marcus Ford of Lovejoy finished with 13 points and Dwayne Hamiel and Mario Agnew of Lovejoy and Logan Berryman of Metcalf all finished with 12 points.
Lovejoy advances to the quarterfinal games on Monday night with a record of 14-5.

Pontiac St. Mary's vs. Raymond Lincolnwood
|
These two teams were evenly matched from the very start of the game. Raymond Lincolnwood outscored Pontiac St. Mary's 14-12 in the first quarter and the two teams went head to head in the second quarter. The score at the half was 23-21.
The hard fought game continued into the third quarter. Early on Pontiac hit first and pulled into the lead with a two point rebound putback by #23 Nate Hayner. But Raymond Lincolnwood was able to battle back to tie the game and pull ahead with a two point basket by #52 Aaron Jenkins. Lincolnwood lead the rest of the quarter. In the fourth quarter #10 Michael Panno of St. Mary's hit a three to cut Lincolnwoods lead to one point, but #55 Chase Jaeger of Lincolnwood answered back with a three of his own to put the Knights ahead by 4. The Knights never looked back. Nate Hayner of St. Mary's finished as the leading scorer of the game with 18 points. Korey Jordan of Lincolnwood finished with 15 points; going 5-6 from the free throw lane.
The Lincolnwood Knights advance to the quarterfinal games Monday night with a record of 22-2.

Nokomis JHS vs. Peoria Christian
|
Peoria Christian Chargers entered the game with a record of 21-1. They have outscored Nokomis 13-5 in the first quarter. #14 Billy Molinari of Peoria Christian scored 6 points in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Chargers outscored Nokomis 14-8. Everything was falling for Peoria Christian and Billy Molinari was the leading scorer for the half with 12 points. Nathan Rhodes of Nokomis was the leading scorer for his team with 9 points in the half.
In the third quarter Peoria Christian continued their hot streak outscoring the Braves of Nokomis 15-6. #5 Austin Dixon added two 3's in the quarter and Billy Molinari contributed 5 points as well. Shortly into the fourth quarter the coach of Peoria Christian took his starters out and Nokomis added some points to their total. The chargers maintained their lead and ended up winning 43-33. Billy Molinari ended with 17 points while sitting the bench much of the fourth quarter. Nathan Rhodes of Nokomis also finished the game with 17 points.
Peoria Christian advances to the quarterfinal round Monday night with a record of 22-1.

Fisher vs. Lovington
|
Both teams played the half in a zone defense. Lovington outscored Fisher 10-6 in the first quarter. #20 Lucas West of Lovington had 4 points in the quarter to the Redbirds. The second quarter was much of the same, but with 5.3 seconds to go in the half. Lucas West steals the ball from Fisher at half court and drains a three point basket 5 feet outside the three point line. The Redbirds lead the Scotties 15-10 at the half.
At the end of the third quarter Lovington was leading by 1 point. Shortly into the fourth quarter of play lovington turns the ball over and fouls Fisher. Fisher takes the lead on a lay-up by #41 Brandon Rice but Lovington quickly answered back. The scoring went silent for several minutes. #50 of Lovington hit a 2 point basket to give lovington the lead. With 35 seconds to play #40 Colton Unzicker of Fisher hit a turnaround jumper in the key to tie the game and send it to overtime.
In the frenzied pace of overtime, both teams turned the ball over several times before #50 was fould and made both free throws with 2:00 to play. The two teams traded layups before #4 Matt McGarigle of Fisher drained a three to put Fisher up by 1 point. With 57 seconds of play Fisher was fouled and missed the the front end of a one and one. #50 Dan Bolsen grabbed the rebound and scored a three point basket with 40 seconds to play to win the game. Dan Bolsen ended the game with 19 points going 3-4 from the free throw line for a total of 8 points in overtime. Colton Unzicker was the leading scorer for Fisher with 13 points.
Lovington advaces to the quarterfinal games Monday night with a record of 20-2.

Dieterich vs. Paris Crestwood
|
The Dieterich Roadrunners jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter only to see the Eagles of Paris Crestwood storm back to take an 8-6 first quarter advantage. Tyler Campbell scored four point in the first quarter for the Roadrunners. Crestwood turned up the defensive pressure in the scond quarter as they outscored the Roadrunners 9-3 to hold a 17-9 lead at the half. Chase Brinkley from Crestwood had nine first half points, scoring 3 two point goals and one trey. Mitch Nosbisch scored all three of Dieterich's second quarter points.
Crestwood outscored Dieterich 11-2 in the first 2:30 of the third quarter to gain a comfortable 28-11 lead. However, the Roadrunners outscored the Eagles 7-0 in the final 3:30 of the third quarter to trail 28-18 heading into the fourth quarter. The closest Dieterich was able to get in the 4th quarter was 8 points as the teams traded baskets for much of the quarter. Chase Brinkley scored on a layup at the 2:25 mark of the 4th quarter to up the lead to 11, 37-26. A steal by Brinkley and a rebound basket by Crestwood at with 55 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Eagles. Chase Brinkley led the Eagles with 20 points and Aaron Rhoades contributed 11 points to lead the Eagles to the first semifinal game on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. Dieterich was led in scoring by Kurt Berg with 15 points, Tyler Campbell had 10 and Mitch Nosbisch had three points.

Wenona Fieldcrest East vs. Springfield Little Flower
|
In a high scoring game, Springfield Little Flower led Wenona Fieldcrest East, 31-25 at halftime. Little Flower, who received 14 points from Joe Carnduff, led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. Fieldcrest East was led in scoring in the first half by Jake Bane with 12 points.
Fieldcrest East clawed its way back into the game by outscoring Little Flower, 10-4 in the third quarter to tie the game at 35 all after three periods. The score was tied 39-39 with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Little Flower scored six unanswered points in a one minute span to take a 45-39 lead. However, a steal by Collin Seggerman at the 2:43 remaining cut the lead to four, 45-41. It then became the Adrian Cave show as he accounted for six of Little Flower's last eight points. Cave scored a two point goal to extend the Falcons lead to 47-41. After a three point goal by Lee Weld of Fieldcrest East sliced the lead to three, 47-44, Cave connected on four straight free the throws to give Little Flower a 51-44 lead. Zack Anderson had a rebound bucket for Fieldcrest East to pull the Knights within five, 51-46. A layup by Josh Walton at the buzzer accounted for the final score of 53-46. Cave led all scorers with 19 points, Joe Carnduff had 16 points, Dominic Walton had 8, Tim Dondanville had 7 and Josh Walton had three for the Falcons. The Knights of Fieldcrrest East were led in scoring by Lee Weld and Jake Bane, each with 12. Zack Anderson had 10 points, Aaron Wilson had 8, and Collin Seggerman rounded out the scoring for Fieldcrest East with four.

Lovejoy vs. Raymond Lincolnwood
|
A low scoring first quarter saw the lead change hands a couple of times before a basket with six seconds remaining in the first quarter gave Lovejoy an 8-7 lead. Lovejoy then extended the lead to 18-11 behind the scoring duo of Dwayne Hamiel and Mario Agnew. The Knights of Raymond Lincolnwood then scored five straight points the last three on a three point goal from Korey Jordan to bring the Knights to within two, 18-16. Lincolnwood then finished off a torrid last minute of the half with a three point goal from Josh Glick to take a 21-20 halftime lead.
A strong start to the third quarter allowed Lovejoy to gain a four point advantage and the Wildcats held a slim 31-27 lead over Lincolnwood with 1:45 remaining. The teams then traded two point baskets for the rest of the quarter and the quarter ended with Lovejoy ahead, 35-33. The fourth quarter was dominated by Mario Agnew from Lovejoy. He scored a rebound basket for the first two points in the fourth quarter at the 4:40 mark to extend the Lovejoy lead to four. After a bucket by Kyle Snyder of Lincolnwood cut the lead to two, Lovejoy answered with a basket by Marcus Ford to regain their four point advantage. On a set play, Josh Glick scored on a back door layup and was fouled. Glick's free throw sliced the lead to one, 39-38. Agnew then went to work. He scored on consecutive rebound baskets to extend Lovejpy's lead to five at 43-38. A three pointer by Glick with 2:20 left in the game narrowed the gap to 43-41. However, those were the last points Lincolnwood would score. Agnew made one of two free throws for a 44-41 Lovejoy lead and then Marcus Ford made a spectacular block, recovered the ball, and drove the length of the floor and made a layup for a 46-41 lead. Agnew scored again inside and Dwayne Hamiel added one free three for the final score of 49-41. Agnew led all scorers with 25 points, Hamiel added 13, Ford chipped in with 8 and Leroy Jones added 3. For the Knights of Raymond Lincolnwood who finish their season at 22-3, Josh Glick led the way with 15 points.Shane Barbridge added 10, Korey Jordan had two three point goals for six points, Kyle Snyder also contributed six points, and Chase Jaeger and Aaron Jenkins each scored two points.

Peoria Christian vs. Lovington
|
The Chargers of Peoria Christian upped their record to 23-1 with a convincing 57-40 victory over the Lovington Redbirds. Peoria Christian led 20-12 after one quarter, held the 8 point lead through the second quarter and led 34-26 at halftime, extended the lead to 15 at the end of the third quarter, 46-31 and then cruised in the fourth quarter en route to to the 57-40 victory. Billy Molinari led the Chargers with 20 points but was limited to just two points in the second half. Jake Winkler scored all seven of his points in the second half as the the Chargers limited Lovington to just 14 second half points. John Hauter had 12 points for Peoria Christian while Luke Knapp chipped in with 10, and Austin Dixon scored one basket in each period to finish with 8 points. The Redbirds were led in scoring by Dan Bolsen who finished with a game high 23 points, 18 coming in the first half. Only two other players scored for the Redbirds, Lucas West with 9 points and Jezzy Ziemet who had 8. Lovington completes its season with a 20-3 record. Peoria Christian will now face Lovejoy in the second semifinal game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Paris Crestwood vs. Springfield Little Flower
|
Paris Crestwood put three players into double figures and rolled to a 66-45 win over Springfield Little Flower. The Eagles shot to a 21-point halftime lead and were never threatened, substituting early in the third quarter. Chase Brinkley, who led the Eagles with 28 points, posted 13 in the second half after getting 15 in the first half. Teammate Logan Henness added 13 and postman Jason Hollis poured in 10, all from underneath. Crestwood scored 17 points in each of the first three quarters, and outscored Little Flower 17-11 in the third period, taking a 51-24 lead. Little Flower poured in 19 points in the fourth quarter, mostly from steal layups and headlong drives into the paint by point guard Adrian Cave. Cave led Little Flower with 27 points, posting 19 of them in the second half including 12 in the final quarter. Teammate Tim Dondanville added 13 for the Falcons. Little Flower will play for third place Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. Paris Crestwood takes a 22-2 record into the championship game against Peoria Christian (24-1).
Paris Crestwood went through Springfield Little Flower's defense at will from the opening tip and rolled to a 17-2 lead after one quarter and 34-13 at halftime. Crestwood got almost all the loose balls and took the ball away when Little Flower got into the half court offense. Four different players scored for Crestwood in the first quarter, led by Chase Brinkley, who scored 9 of the 17 first half points, and who engineered the offense with timely dishes to teammates open underneath or on the sidelines. Crestwood's Aaron Rhoads scored first off the opening tip to give his Eagles the 2-0 lead with 5:56 left in the 1st quarter. Other Eagles to score in the opening period were Logan Hanness and Jason Hollis. Little Flower's Tim Dondanville put one in from underneath with 5:43 to go in the 1st quarter and his Falcons didn't scoe again until the 5:44 mark of the second quarter when point guard Adrian Cave broke the 5:59 scoring drought with a scoop layup. Cave scored 11 of Little Flower's 13 first half points. Crestwood's widest magin in the frist half was 22-4 with 4:09 left in the second quarter. Little Flower scored the next 7 points to whittle the deficit to 22-10 and then the two teams trades baskets till the end of the second quarter.

Lovejoy vs. Peoria Christian

Fundamentally fluid Peoria Christian rode the all-around play of Billy Molinari to a 23-point lead early in the fourth quarter and then hung on to take a 52-37 win over Lovejoy. Peoria Christian extended its 33-17 halftime lead to 43-17 with 2:12 left in the 3rd quarter when Lovejoy's Justin Atkins hit a short jumper to snap a scoring drought for Lovejoy that went 8:49 over the last half of the second quarter and the first part of the third quarter. Peoria Christian moved to a lead of 47-23 after the third quarter and was ahead 48-25 with 5:05 remaining in the game when Billy Molinari left the game for good, teammate Jake Winkler left the game limping and Coach Joe Paris started putting the substitutes into the game. That opened the door for a Lovejoy run that cut the deficit to 48-37 with :47.8 remaining in the game. Lovejoy's Dwayne Hamiel led the comeback getting seven of 10 Wildcats points in the scoring spree. In the final 2:25 of the game, Peoria Christian missed 9 of 13 free throw attempts. Lovejoy's Dwayne Hamiel led his team with 20 points and was the game's leading scorer. He got 4 in the 1st quarter, 2 each in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and 11 in the final 6 minutes. Teammate Marcus Ford added 10. Inspired by a large contingent of followers -- who actually cheered loudly and in unison for their team -- Peoria Christian ran its record to 24-1 and will face 22-2 Paris Crestwood for the 8A title Thursday night following the third place game between Lovejoy (15-6) and Springfield Little Flower (22-3)which begins at 6:00 p.m. Billy Molinari led Peoria Christian in scoring with 17 points. He got 15 in the first half to lead his team to a 33-17 lead at intermission, got a basket in the third quarter and did not score before he left the game with 5:05 to go in the 4th quarter. Teammate Luke Knapp chipped in 11 for the winners and teammate Austin Dixon added 7.
Down 15-9 with :26.9 left in the first quarter, Peoria Christian dismantled the Lovejoy defense with workmanlike precision and stormed back to take a 33-17 halftime lead. Lovejoy scored only 2 points in the second quarter, on a leaper in the lane from Dwayne Hamiel at the 4:51 mark, and when the Wildcats looked up to check the score, they trailed only 18-17. But then the Chargers, behind the scoring and playmaking of Billy Molinari, ran off the final 15 points of the second quarter. In that spurt, Molinari, who handled the ball out front on offense and who was under in the 2-1-2 zone, successively hit a three-pointer from the left side (at 3:03), a three-pointer from the right side (at 2:13) and a baseline drive from the right side (at 1:39) to move Peoria Christian ahead 28-17. Molinari scored 4 points in the first quarter and 11 in the second for 15 at halftime, including three treys. When Peoria Cristian spurted ahead Lovejoy abandoned its ''pound away in the paint'' strategy and went to shooting three-pointers but with no success. Peoria Christian got more than 90 percent of the rebounds off the missed treys, whether they be underneath or long, and turned many of them into fast breaks that produced points.

Springfield Little Flower vs. Lovejoy
|
In a high scoring third place game, the Falcons of Springfield Little Flower outscored the Wildcats of Lovejoy, 36-34 to lead by two at halftime. Adrian Cave led the Falcons in the first half with 11 points and Tim Dondanville had 9 points at intermission. Lovejoy was led in scoring by the terrrific duo of Mario Agnew and Marcus Ford who each had 16 points.
A three point goal by Dwayne Hamiel to be beat the buzzer brought the Wildcats to within three, 55-52, heading into the fourth quarter. Little Flower held the lead until the 3:00 minute mark of the fourth quarter when a basket in the paint by Lovejoy gave the Falcons a 60-59 lead. Lovejoy then scored two free throws to make it a 62-59 score and a rebound basket by Agnew to go up 64-59. Little Flower's Dominic Walton scored to slice the lead to 64-61. After three misses by Lovejoy, Josh Walto hit a short jumper to pull Little Flower to within one at 64-63. Lovejoy outscored Lille Flower 8-2 in the final 1:35 of the game to win by a final score of 72-65.
Lovejoy was led in scoring by Marcus Ford with 26 points, Mario Agnew had 25, Dwayne Hamiel had 11, Leroy Jones had 7 and Xavier Williams had 3. Adrian Cave led Little Flower with 24 points, Tim Dondanville had 13, Josh Walton had 12, Joe Carnduff had 9, and Dominic Walton had 7.

Paris Crestwood vs. Peoria Christian

The 2005 Class 8A championship game was played at a feverish pace in a jammed pack gymnasium that rocked with enthusiam. Paris Crestwood led 14-4 after one quarter as Chase Brinkley had 10 of his team's 14 points. John Hauter had all four of Peoria Christian's points in the quarter. Peoria Christian cut the lead to seven during the second quarter before Crestwood scored the last two points of the second quarter for 25-16 halftime lead. Brinkley added and five more points in the second stanza to help Crestwood to their nine point halftime lead. Peoria Christian, which only had four points after the first quarter, outscored the Eagles 12-11 in the second quarter. Billy Molinari scored five points for the Chargers in the 2nd quarter as they tried to get back in the game.
The third quarter was the Chase Brinkley show as the 5'10'' guard for Crestwood scored all 11 of his team's points in the quarter. Brinkley connected on four 2 point goals and one 3 point goal for his 11 points. Peoria Christian once again outscored Crestwood 12-11 in the quarter to trail 36-28 at the end of the third quarter. Austin Dixon had six of the Chargers' 12 points in the quarter.
Peoria Christain got the first bucket of the fourth quarter when Jake Winkler nailed a two pointer to pull the Chargers within six, 36-30. However, that was the closest they would come for the rest of the game as Logan Henness and Aaron Rhoads made consecutive baskets for the Eagles to extend the lead to 10, 40-30. After two free throws by Molinari at the 3:50 mark, closed the gap to 40-32, Crestwood scored seven unanswered points to take a commanding 47-32 lead. All seven points were scored by Brinkley on free throws. A three point basket by Nate White from Peoria Christian cut the lead to 12, but they could get no closer as Crestwood scored the last points of the game with 1:09 remaining.
Chase Brinkley set a class 8A championship game record by scortching the nets for 35 points, easily eclipsing the previous record of 30 set in 1992 by Travis Wallbaum of Ashland and in 1994 by Brian Martin of Chrisman. Jason Hollis added 8 points for Crestwood, while Logan Henness scored four points, Ryan Cash had one three point goal for three points, and Aaron Rhoads chipped in with 2 points. Crestwood claims its first class 8A boys basketball title and finishes the season with a 23-2 record. Peoria Christian, which finishes the season with a 24-2 record, was led in scoring by Austin Dixon with 10 points. Hauter had 8 points, Molinari had 7, Nate White had 3, and Jake Winkler chipped in with two points.
