Game Comments: Mendon Unity held on to defeat Mt. Olive by a score of 23-21 Saturday night to advance to the championship game of the 7th grade Class 2A girls basketball finals. Unity remains undefeated and will take a sparkling 27-0 record into the championship game against the winner of Paris Crestwood vs. Odell. Mt. Olive (25-1) will play for 3rd place honors Thursday night. The game really boiled down to the 3 point goal. Mt. Olive was leading 9-2 with seconds remaining in the 1st quarter when Kaylee Kuhn just barely beat the buzzer with a 3 pointer to cut the lead to 9-5 heading into the 2nd quarter. The 3 pointer ended up being huge for the Colts given their 2 point win. Both teams played even in the second quarter albeit a low scoring quarter when each team tallied just one bucket apiece. Then in the 3rd quarter, the 3 point goal really helped the Colts again as Madison Garcia nailed three 3 pointers as Unity took the lead 18-16 heading into the final stanza. Claire Rabe scored on a layup at the 5:15 mark of the 4th quarter to extend the lead to four at 20-16. About a minute later, Mt. Olive countered with a layup of its own from Brianna Henke who led all scorers with 13 points. Kuhn made one of two free throws to give Unity a 21-18 lead with 2:03 remaining, Henke then answered by making both free throws after she was fouled which made the score 21-20 with 1:45 left. Mendon brought the ball down the court and with 1:26 left in the game, Kuhn banked in a 17 footer from the right side to give the Colts a 23-20 lead. Courtney Kernich was fouled as Mt. Olive brought the ball up the court and she made the first of the one and bonus to cut the lead to two at 23-21 with a 1:19 showing on the clock. Unity missed a layup and Mt. Olive grabbed the rebound. The Bombers has a couple of good looks but the ball simply wouldn't drop and Unity was finally able to grab a rebound but they immediately committed a turnover and gave the ball right back to Mt. Olive for a chance to tie the game. With 36 seconds remaining, Mt. Olive missed another shot and Unity grabbed the rebound. With just 26 ticks of the clock left, Mt. Olive fouled. On the inbounds pass, Unity turned it over again to give the ball back to Mt. Olive. The Bombers took a shot with 15 seconds left only to miss again. Unity rebounded the missed shot and they were fouled with :7.6 left in the game. Needing to foul to get the Colts in the bonus, Mt. Olive did just that. They fouled with :5.9 left which was just their 6th foul of the half. Unity inbounded the ball once again at halfcourt. Mt. Olive managed to deflect the inbounds pass, there was a scramble for the ball, Mt. Olive came away with the ball and managed to get the ball to a wide open Jill Niehaus. However, she had just enough time to catch the ball and shoot before the horn sounded to end the game. From just inside the 3 point line, Niehaus' shot looked good but it hit the front of the rim, bounced once, but did not go through ending the undefeated season dreams for the Bombers while Unity was able to breathe a sigh of relief and kept their undefeated season dream alive. A tremendous game by both teams. |
