Game Comments: The Wildcats of Cissna Park won a thriller Thursday night by defeating Bourbonnais Maternity BVM, 33-32 and in doing so won the 8th grade class 1A championship. The Wildcats captured the 7th grade championship in 2014. This was a well-played game that came down to literally the final seconds. Although Cissna Park led 21-12 at the half, Maternity did not quit and only trailed by 4 entering the 4th quarter. It could have been just two but Conner Lorber, who led Cissna Park with 12 points hit a little floater in the lane just as time expired at the end of the third period. Broghan OConnor of Maternity made one of two free throws to start the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 27-24. It wasn't until the 4:27 mark of the 4th period before Cissna Park made its first basket of the quarter when Lorber connected to extend the lead to 29-24. BVM came right back when Cole Gagnon connected and the lead was once again three at 29-26 with 3:59 remaining. Both teams then traded turnovers and missed shots and it was not until there was just 1:39 left in the game that Christian Stadeli scored on an inbounds play under his own basket to extend the lead to 5 at 31-26. After a BVM miss, the BVM Wildcats were forced to foul to get the ball back. However, they only had 2 team fouls and so they fouled four times in a row in an attempt to get Cissna Park in the one and bonus. On the final inbounds play, there was a scramble for the ball which resulted in a held ball and the possession arrow was in favor of BVM. After they inbounded the ball, Brian Fehr stole the ball for Cissna Park and was fouled on his layup attempt. He calmly swished both free throws and Cissna Park appeared to be in full control as they held a 33-26 lead with 30 seconds left in the game. But Maternity BVM did not quit. Payton Gerberding nailed a three pointer with 20 seconds left to cut the lead to four at 33-29. With just 12 seconds left in the game, Fehr was fouled and he went to the line for a one and bonus. He missed the front end, BVM grabbed the rebound, and OConnor sank a long three pointer for BVM to cut the lead to one at 33-32 but there was only .8 of a second left in the game. BVM called a timeout and on the inbounds pass, Cissna Park was able to dribble away from the BVM players and in doing so secured the game and the championship. Congratulations to both teams.
