Game Comments: The first game of the 2015 IESA 7th grade Class 2A boys basketball tournament turned out to be a thriller as the Raiders of Assumption Central A & M defeated the previously unbeaten Wolverines of Winchester, 42-34 in double overtime. The Raiders will now take their 23-2 record into the first semifinal game at 5:00 p.m. later today. The game started totally in favor of Winchester as the Wolverines jumped to an early 5-0 lead. Central A & M then turned up the defensive pressure and took an 18-14 lead into the locker room at the half. After outscoring Winchester by 5 in the third quarter and scoring the first basket of the fourth quarter, the Raiders led 27-15 and seemed to have the game well in hand. But, the Wolverines did not quit. Hunter Drake, who led all scorers with 19 points, drained a 3 point goal with 37 seconds remaining to pull Winchester within two, 31-29. Jacob Paradee then converted one of two tosses at the free throw line to give the Raiders a 3 pt. lead, 32-29 with just 32 seconds left on the clock. Drake then launched a high arching 20 foot bomb from just to the right of the top of the key with 14 seconds left that swished through the net to tie it all at 32. A missed layup by the Raiders gave Winchester a chance to win in regulation but their three point attempt at the buzzer was just short sending the game into overtime. The first overtime the teams simply traded layups as the teams went into the second overtime deadlocked at 34. The second overtime was all Raiders as they outscored Winchester 8-0 to secure the victory and a place in the semifinals. Congratulations to both teams.
