Game Comments: The Elmwood Trojans stamped their ticket to the championship game of the 8th grade class 2A state state tournament with a hard-fought 51-45 victory over rival Peoria St. Vincent dePaul. The 4th quarter provided a thrilling finish to a terrific ballgame. Isaiah Groeper, a 7th grader, played a flawless game as he scored 28 points including a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line. His three point basket with 38 seconds left on the clock in the 4th quarter allowed Elmwood to regain the lead at 47-45 after the Vikings had made a huge run to take a one point lead in the 4th quarter. With 48 seconds left and down 44-41, Luke Shadid made a twisting layup to give pull the Vikings within 1 at 44-43. Dylan Lonteen, who led St. Vincent dePaul with 19 points, stole the ball from Elmwood at the halfcourt line and converted the layup to give the Vikings the lead, 45-44. Groeper then hit a step back 3 from about 21 ft. with 38 seconds left to give Elmwood the lead that they would not relinquish. After a Viking miss, Groeper grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made both charity tosses to extend the lead to 49-45. The Vikings were unable to score again and Elmwood now moves on to the championship game on Thursday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. St. Vincent dePaul will play for 3rd place honors at 6:00 p.m. that day.
