Game Comments: The third quarterfinal game of the day went into overtime as the Spartans of Madison escaped with a 39-38 victory over the Raiders of Champaign St. Matthew. It was a close game throughout as St. Matthew led by only one at the end of the first quarter and also at halftime. Madison managed to outscore the Raiders 10-5 in the third quarter. Markeith Reynolds, who led all scorers with 29 points tallied eight points in the third stanza to help the Spartans take a 29-25 advantage heading into the final quarter. St. Matthew rallied in the 4th quarter and with less than two seconds on the clock and the score tied at 36 had the ball out-of-bounds at halfcourt with a chance to win the game. However, the inbounds pass sailed out of bounds without anyone touching the ball giving the ball back to Madison for their chance to win it regulation. Reynolds had a chance to win it for the Spartans but his shot bounced off the rim and the game headed to overtime. Neither team was able to score much in the overtime. Reynolds had a bucket for Madison and Doug Wallen scored one for St. Matthew. With just under three seconds left in the overtime, St. Matthew was attempting an inbounds pass when they were called for a foul. The St. Matthew coach was assessed a technical foul for being out of the coaching box. Reynolds made one of two free throws, giving Madison a 39-38 lead. On Madison's inbounds pass after the two free throw attempts, they were whistled for an illegal screen foul giving the ball back to St. Matthew. The Raiders got the ball into the hands of Quin Nottingham on the inbounds pass. Nottingham, who led the Raiders with 18 points, got a decent look and launched about a 25 foot jump shot that hit the back of the rim and bounced away giving Madison the victory. Madison, now 21-1, will play in the second semifinal game of the evening while St. Matthew closes out their season wit ha 20-6 record. Congratulations to both teams.
