Game Comments: In what can only be called one of the great IESA games, the Liberty Eagles defeated Greenfield 41-39 in overtime in the 3rd game of the 7th grade Class 2A tournament. Liberty will now takes its 20-1 record into the semifinals while Greenfield bows out at 25-1.
Greenfield led throughout much of the game, leading 18-14 at halftime and 23-16 after three quarters. But, the Eagles never gave up and Connor Wolf's three point goal with 2:57 remaining in the 4th quarter pulled Liberty to within one at 29-28. Both teams then traded misses and at the 2:13 mark, Michael Blewett nailed two free throws for the Eagles to give them a 30-29 lead. Greenfield them missed consecutive one and bonus opoprtunities and with 36 seconds remaining, Wolf was again at the charity stripe. He knocked home both free throws to give Liberty a 32-29 lead. Greenfield got a layup from Pat McWhorter and he was fouled on the play as he went to the line for a conventional three point play and a chance to tie the game at 32. McWhorter missed the free throw and Blewett was immediately fouled. He went to the line where he made one of two to give Liberty a 33-31 lead with 15 seconds to go. Greenfield worked the ball down the court and found McWhorter near the baseline. He made a spectacular backwards layup with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 33 and send the game to overtime. McWhorter scord the first basket in the overtime rebounding his own miss and putting it back in for a 35-33 lead. A steal by Wolf and a layup tied the game at 35 before Sam Krotz made one of two charity tosses to give the lead back to the Tigers at 36-35. The Tigers stole the ball and appeared headed for victory when after missing a shot they grabbed the rebound, threw it out to Isaac Masters who nailed a three pointer for a four point lead 39-35. But Liberty came roaring back when Wolf responded with a three point goal of his own from the left corner with one minute to go to bring the Eagles to within one at 39-38. Greenfield worked the ball around the perimeter and then got the ball inside to Krotz who was then fouled. He missed both free throws. Liberty grabbed the second rebound and was fouled immediately. Austin Mast, who earlier in the 3rd quarter had missed both of his free throw chances, hit both of them this time to give the lead back to Liberty 40-39. Greenfield then turned the ball over with 18 seconds remaining and a foul sent Wolf back to the lilne. This time the 7th grader only made one of the free throws to extend the Liberty lead to 41-39. With 16 seconds to go and down two, Greenfield pushed the ball up the court with a chance to tie or even win. Masters had a great look at a wide open 22 footer on the right wing. The ball went almost all the way down but rattled out. On the rebound, Liberty knocked it out of bounds with 1.3 seconds remaining. On the inbounds pass, Masters again took the shot from deep in the right corner. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the shot once again rattled out after almost going in giving Liberty an absolutely heart-stopping, thrilling victory. |
