Game Comments: In front of a packed house, Normal Parkside capped off an undefeated season with a thrilling 46-42 victory over Champaign Franklin to claim the 7th grade class 4A championship. The game was simply a classic and was close throughout. Both teams are to be commended for their sportsmanship. The first quarter was intense. Shea Cupples, who tied a class 4A championship game record with five 3 point goals, made two in the first quarter and Luke Yoder added a 3 pointer to jump start the Pythons to a 13-11 lead after one quarter. The second quarter saw the Knights outscore the Pythons 12-9 to take a 23-22 lead into the locker room at the half. The third quarter was back and forth and Parkside led 31-30 after three periods. The fourth quarter was outstanding. Donzell Johnson got a bucket for the Pythons to make it 33-30 and then Cupples added his 4th three pointer of the evening at the 4:15 mark to make it 36-30 in favor of the Pythons. Franklin came roaring back as Jalen Booker made back-to-back 3 pointers for the Knights to tie the game at 36 all. Cupples answered with his 5th three pointer of the evening with 2:34 showing on the clock to give Parkside the lead at 39-36. Drew Wollenschlager then made another three pointer for the Pythons to give them the lead at 42-36 with 2:09 remaining. After a turnover by Parkside, Tortious Cason scored on a lay up for the Knights to cut the lead to four, 42-38 win 1:33 left. A steal and a lay up by Josh Thompson at the 1:20 mark cut the deficit to two with just 1:20 remaining. The Pythons missed their next shot and the Knights got the ball only to have Griffin Yaklich steal it for the Pythons. Yaklich was fouled on his layup but missed both free throws. The Knights turned it over on their ensuing possession as Luke Yoder stole the ball and was fouled as he drove to the basket for a lay up. Yoder made both free throws with just 28 seconds left to extend the lead to 44-40. Cole Hernandez then stole the inbounds pass and made a bucket to give the Pythons a 46-40 lead with just 25 ticks left on the clock. Sean Davis put in a rebound bucket after a missed shot to make the final score 46-42. It was a terrific game and both teams are to be congratulated on great seasons. In addition to tying the most 3 point field goals in the championship game with five, Cupples set the 7th grade Class 4A record for most three point field goals in the tournament with 11. Parkside finishes the season at 26-0 while Franklin closes the season at 24-2.
