Game Comments: First IESA State Champions recognized: Prior to the start of the game, these members of the Virginia team that won the first IESA State Baseball Tournament in 1955 at Towanda were recognized. Attending the game were leftfielder Bernie Davlin, third baseman Terry Smith and pitcher-first baseman Jeff Knight. Virginia beat LaSalle, 9-6, for the very first title. Minooka took advantage of eight East Peoria Central errors, took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, and was never threatened. Winning pitcher Mike Foltynewicz dominated the game, but still gave up two runs to East Peoria Central in the top of the sixth. Joe Kelch led off the Central sixth with a double, stole third and scored when Corey Crotz was safe on an error. Alex Cline then doubled home Crotz for the second run. Still, Foltynewicz struck out three batters in the sixth. His strikeouts by inning were 2-2-2-3-3-3-1. Minooka advances to the semifinals with a 21-2 record. East Peoria Central finished 20-6. |
