Game Comments: The 8-3A state title game saw the Dragons of Hillsboro take on the Panthers of Washington MS. Both teams came to play tonight. The Panthers were first on the board in the gameietz. #21 Caleb Fisher for Washington and #32 Donovan Moore for Hillsboro traded threes several trips down the court. #32 Moore tied the game at 9 with 52 secondsto play at the free throw line. Heading into the second quarter the Dragons had a one point lead. The Panthers retook the lead in the second near the four minute mark and Hillsboro took a quick timeout to regroup. #32 Moore tied the game at the line again. Hillsboro retook the lead on a nice post move to the basket by #42 Jordan Gregg. After another post basket by #42 Gregg, Washington takes a timeout to strategize. Both teams scoring cooled off in the second quarter and Hillsboro took a small 5point lead into the locker room at the half.
In second half of play Washington MS #33 JJ Guedet put the first points of the half on a nice post move. Hillsboro’s #34 drained a baseline three for Hilssboro’s first points. At the 1:40 mark, #1 Sam Walter gets a nice pass in the lane and drives to the basket to break the scoring drought. Next trip down he repats and cuts the lead to 2 with a minute to go in the quarter. The Dragons kept their 5 point lead into the final quarter of the game. The Panthers turned up the heat on defense in the final quarter and #13 Cole Ludolph stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to cut into the Dragons lead. At the three min mark #24 makes the basket and gives the Panthers the lead for the first time in the half. #34 Landon Carroll for Hilssboro drains a long three to tie the game at 30. #33 Guedet retook the lead with a nice hook shot in the lane 32-30. This lead the Panthers would not relinquish.
Leading scorer for the game was #32 Donovon Moore of Hillsboro with 13 points. Washington got points from seven different players in the game. Congratulations to both teams on a great season. This is Coach Guedet and Washington Middle School’s the first 8-3A state title.
