On February 6, I had the opportunity to officiate the IESA 8-3A sectional game at Peoria Heights. At the end of the game when both teams knew that with under a minute to play and what the final outcome would be, this allowed both coaches to let everyone be a participant. With under thirty seconds left there was one player from Putnam County, Aaron Ferguson (with special needs), who was very excited to get this opportunity. When this happened, the coach from Peoria Christian asked one of his players to commit a foul on this play so that Aaron could have a chance to make a basket. Aaron shot the free throw and made the basket. This goes to show that there is more to this game than just winning. I would like to like commend these coaches on this. What a great display of sportsmanship for everyone involved. Great Job!!
EFFINGHAM ST. ANTHONY BOYS' BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF RECOGNIZED FOR SPORTSMANSHIP

During the IESA 7-2A Sectional at North Clay high school the Effingham St. Anthony coaching staff showed outstanding sportsmanship. During a close, back and forth sectional game the coaching staff was extremely professional with the game officials, not yelling or voicing displeasure with any calls, asking respectful questions for clarification, and ensuring that their players represented themselves in the highest fashion when the opposing players starting taking some cheap shots at them and playing rougher. When any player started to show any displeasure with an official's call, the coaches immediately identified it and corrected the player. It was a nice side note in a tightly contested, emotional game to have these coaches on the sideline.
PEKIN BROADMOOR BASKETBALL COACH APPLAUDED FOR POSITIVE COACHING BEHAVIORS

The Broadmoor Bruins were playing Morton JH in the first round of the 8th Grade regional. Morton had the game pretty well in hand but Broadmoor was making one last run in the second half. #41 retrieved an offensive rebound and instead of taking a wide open shot, he immediately looked to pass and subsequently double-dribbled. This happened right in front of the Broadmoor bench while Coach Zac Williams was yelling at him to shoot. Instead of being frustrated in his player who knew he had just made a mistake and who was merely trying to get the ball to a teammate for a better shot, Coach Williams grabbed the player, hugged him, said something in his ear, and sent him down to the other end of the court. You could see coach's frustration in his face and his voice. But it was a different type of frustration. He was frustrated for his player, not with his player. As Coach Williams hugged his player the crowd audibly laughed. They were laughing at Coach Williams, not the player. Coach Williams encountered a teachable moment in a stressful situation and chose compassion and humor to support his player. He also showed those of us in attendance how much he cares for his players.
